About The Position

The Chief Application Officer (CAO) provides strategic and operational leadership for the hospital's Epic electronic health record (EHR) platform and all integrated third party clinical and revenue cycle systems. Leader is accountable for the design, implementation, optimization, and ongoing performance of clinical and revenue cycle applications that support safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. CAO works in close partnership with clinical, operational, and revenue cycle leaders, to translate organizational strategy and frontline needs into technology-enabled solutions that improve clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, clinician experience, and financial performance. Leader ensures alignment between clinical operations, IT strategy, vendor capabilities, and regulatory requirements while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree Healthcare Administration, Information Technology, Business Administration, or related field and 8+ years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare IT or clinical applications. Extensive Epic experience, including leadership responsibility for multiple Epic modules and integrated systems is strongly preferred.
  • Or Bachelor's Degree Healthcare Administration, Information Technology, Business Administration, or related field and 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare IT or clinical applications. Extensive Epic experience and certification, including leadership responsibility for multiple Epic modules and integrated systems is strongly preferred.

  • Certified Healthcare Chief Information Officer (CHICO) Preferred
  • Certified Digital Health Leader (CDH-L) from CHIME Preferred
  • Epic certification(s) Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Epic Clinical Applications Leadership: Provide strategic and operational leadership for the entire Epic ecosystem, ensuring applications are governed, optimized, and aligned with clinical, operational, and regulatory needs. Drive the long-term application roadmap while safeguarding system reliability and supporting seamless clinical workflows.
  • Clinical Revenue Cycle Partnership: Develop and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with clinical and revenue cycle leaders to translate operational needs into effective technology solutions. Ensure application strategy supports care delivery, financial performance, and organizational alignment.
  • Third Party Systems Interoperability: Oversee the selection, integration, and performance of all third-party clinical and revenue cycle systems, ensuring they work seamlessly within the Epic and enterprise architecture. Emphasize interoperability, data integrity, and strong vendor management to maximize value and system reliability.
  • Leadership Talent Development: Develop a high-performing applications organization through strong leadership, clear expectations, and a culture of collaboration. Ensure teams are empowered, aligned, and equipped to support complex clinical and revenue cycle environments.
  • Operational Excellence Continuous Improvement: Drive a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring systems remain reliable, efficient, and aligned with evolving organizational needs. Support operational readiness for major initiatives and maintain strong processes for change, incident, and release management.
