Program Overview: KBR’s ASTRO (Advanced Space Technology Research and Optimization) contract to provide mission equipment operations, maintenance, and upgrades to the USSF’s AMOS site in Maui, Hawaii. The AMOS site plays a vital role in national security by monitoring man-made objects in space and continuously developing next-generation capabilities to keep pace with the expanding space domain. This presents an incredible opportunity to push the boundaries of space and telescope technologies. Position Overview: KBR is seeking a highly skilled Telescope Engineer to support telescope control systems including system SW design, engineering, development and testing for large telescope systems. This engineer will assess and support development of control software for sensors and other ancillary telescope equipment. This will include supporting major troubleshooting and upgrades to critical telescope systems including focus and figure control.

  • Advise and lead software, electrical, mechanical and optical engineers in calibration and optimizing performance of large telescope systems
  • Mentor less experienced staff in developing and modifying critical telescope software systems and control logic for telescopes and ancillary equipment
  • Work with engineers and technicians to streamline integration of new equipment or control systems at all levels of telescope function
  • Assist with designing modifications to telescopes to improve performance and integrate new sensors
  • Assist with design of opto-mechanical systems and/or SW algorithms to improve image quality of telescope systems
  • Develop and implement tests to validate system performance
  • Work with interdisciplinary teams to improve system performance and reliability
  • Provide training and technical support to maintenance staff and telescope operators
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, or related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Proficiency in developing custom SW to control complex electro-optical systems
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Experience analyzing and improving performance of large telescope systems
  • Minimum of 10+ years experience in providing Engineering support of large telescope systems
  • Active Secret clearance
  • Design of SW to control complex electro-optical systems
  • Experience developing sensor control software
