The Senior Accounting Specialist is responsible for handling a variety of accounting tasks, ensuring accuracy in financial records, and supporting the Finance Department with day-to-day operations with little or no direction. This role involves processing transactions, reconciling accounts, assisting with financial reporting, supporting internal and external Audits, and coordinating various accounting activities. This position also supports the Accounts Payable and Payroll functions of the department. Starting wage range: $37.62 - $42.84 per hour. Location: This is an in-person position located in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent Required
  • 5 years of job-related experience. Related education may be substituted for experience on a 2:1 ratio (e.g. 2 years of education equals 1 year of experience). Required
  • 2 years of job-related experience with General Ledgers, Financial Reporting, and/or basic accounting processes and procedures. Required
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply basic accounting principles. (required proficiency)
  • Intermediate knowledge of Accounts Payable processes. (required proficiency)
  • Basic knowledge of and the ability to learn more advanced Payroll processes and procedures. (required proficiency)
  • Excellent time management skills. (required proficiency)
  • Ability to detect, investigate, and resolve discrepancies. (required proficiency)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 applications, (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). (required proficiency)
  • Ability to quickly develop a working knowledge of financial systems. (required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of Enterprise Resource Systems (ERP) such as Microsoft Dynamics NAV. (required proficiency)
  • Ability to teach/train individuals and/or groups in areas related to job function. (required proficiency)

Responsibilities

  • Reconcile bank statements, credit card transactions, and general ledger accounts.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and documentation for audits and compliance.
  • Under the guidance of the Assistant Controller, coordinate month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Prepare or review journal entries and ensure proper classification of financial data.
  • Process or review accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR) transactions, including invoicing, payments, and collections.
  • Support payroll processing and reconciliations as needed.
  • Assist with preparing financial and management costs reports.
  • Assist with audits by providing support, preparing schedules,â answering questions, and coordinating audit activities and deliverables.
  • Assist with tax calculations and filings.
  • Assist with other financial/accounting projects as needed.
  • Communicate with vendors, customers, stakeholders or process owners as necessary to advise and address issues or support internal operations.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify discrepancies and work to resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Serve as back-up for other accounting positions as needed.
  • May be required to lead or coordinate accounting projects of a basic complexity.
  • Learn, adopt, and apply safety programs.
