About The Position

Join our Recreation Division as a Sports Program Assistant. You will run sports programs and make sure facilities are ready for action. Knowing baseball and softball rules helps you manage the game and handle conflict effectively. Occasional duties include stepping in as an official or handling weather and crowd-control issues. Working outside in different weather is common. Physical work involves lifting up to 75 pounds and staying active on your feet. Please note that the City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-served basis. As soon as we determine we have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice. The hiring rate for this role is $18.00/hour. This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act. The City of Aurora is seeking highly motivated and talented individuals for a career in the Recreation Division. The Sports Assistant manages a variety of duties including the operation of sports programs and facilities while ensuring quality customer service. Works under the general supervision of the Sports Superintendant.

Requirements

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
  • Education: High School diploma
  • Experience: At least 6 months of experience working with individuals with disabilities in recreation programs or similar activities
  • Considerable knowledge of recreation philosophy, planning, and administration.
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of officiating, sports, and recreation.
  • Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan for and supervise staff and volunteers.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have strong computer skills to include, keyboarding, Microsoft Office suites to include Word, Xcel and Power Point and internet.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens and private organizations.
  • The ability to respond to customer inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • The ability to motivate staff, create a positive work environment, and hold staff accountable for achieving measurable goals and developing their skills.
  • The ability to handle sensitive and stressful situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and implement needed organizational systems.
  • Valid state driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification required or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months.

Nice To Haves

  • In order to be successful in this position, applicants must have the ability to obtain a Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record.
  • Sports Officiating certifications desired.
  • You will have the opportunity to occasionally use your own personal equipment (i.e. Vehicle, cell phone, laptop, tools, etc.) during the course of your employment.

Responsibilities

  • Timely initiation of all activities, games, programs to which they have been assigned. Including last minute details regarding set-up of facilities.
  • Adherence to all schedules provided by Sports Staff. Including but not limited to; referees, officials, community service, game time, practice time, forfeit time.
  • Responsible for decisions regarding crowd control, inclement weather, darkness, lightening, etc.
  • Answer and interpret all questions/problems regarding rules and regulations during any athletic event.
  • Maintain accurate records for the following: community service individuals, league standings (when applicable), other part time staff under their supervision.
  • May be called upon to officiate any or all games when necessary.
  • Will have general knowledge of assigned sport including rules and regulations.
  • Will understand how the game is played including the principles, practice, and techniques used in recreational sporting events.
  • Will have the ability to make proper calls on command and the ability to accept criticism.
  • Has the ability to handle participants, team managers and/or coaches under difficult game situations.
  • Capable of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow employees, various community organizations, and the public.
  • Responsibilities will include supervision and coordination of leagues, coaches and fields; training, scheduling, and supervising umpires; inputting registrations and forming teams, evaluating umpires, checking fields, field preparation, conflict resolution and providing customer service for coaches, parents, and team players.
  • Successful candidate must comprehend and have the ability to apply the rules of baseball and softball.
  • Applicant must also have excellent people, communication and conflict management skills.
  • May also be asked to assist with facility operations duties at ASP or Olympic Park.
