About The Position

The Speech Pathologist II is an experienced therapist capable of independently adapting interventions to meet specific patient needs. This role requires the ability to provide coverage in their primary setting, as well as throughout hospital, rehab, and outpatient settings with minimal to moderate support. The Speech Pathologist II assumes basic leadership roles, demonstrates flexibility, exercises good judgment, problem-solves, and collaborates effectively with colleagues. They are expected to participate efficiently in department projects and events, attend educational activities, and provide in-service education to staff. At this level, the Speech Pathologist begins developing skills for student supervision under mentorship and can participate in department-level research activities.

Requirements

  • License (or licensure eligible) from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP)
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
  • Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a SLP (for continued employment)
  • Current CCC in SLP (for continued employment)
  • CPR certification (for continued employment)
  • Minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of experience
  • Previous clinical experience with evaluation/treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic/cognitive communication disorders and swallowing disorders
  • Previous experience performing swallow studies including MBS and bedside assessments
  • Previous experience planning and executing treatment
  • Masters Degree from an ASHA accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology
  • Completes required learning exchange courses

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of two (2) years of previous clinical experience
  • Previous experience with trach management as related to swallowing and communication disorders
  • Previous experience managing complex swallowing and/or communication, linguistic/cognitive disorders
  • Minimal novice experience with dysphasia including MBS and bedside swallow evaluations
  • Previous work experience in a similar practice setting (e.g. critical care, long term care, outpatient, etc.)
  • Previous experience with computer-based documentation systems

Responsibilities

  • Independently adapt intervention to meet specific patient’s needs
  • Provide coverage in their primary setting and as needed throughout the hospital/rehab/outpatient settings
  • Assume basic leadership roles within the department
  • Demonstrate flexibility, exercise good judgment, problem solving, and work collaboratively with colleagues
  • Participate in department projects or events in an efficient and productive manner
  • Provide in-service education to other staff
  • Develop skills to provide student supervision with mentorship of an experienced student supervisor
  • Participate in research activities at the department level
  • Schedule frequency and intensity of therapy for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders
  • Select assessment instruments and administer assessment for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders
  • Interpret results for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders
  • Complete documentation for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders
  • Plan and carry out treatment strategies for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders
  • Develop long- and short-term goals for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders
  • Perform patient/family/staff education for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders
  • Report at patient/family/team conferences for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders
  • Terminate therapy when appropriate for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders
  • Manage or mentor and provide advice/guidance/training regarding clinical skills, professional practice, ethical behaviors, billing, caseload management, educational opportunities, documentation and patient care for patient issues or when requested by staff
  • Provide student supervision if deemed competent by Department Manager or Student Program Coordinator
  • Provide services to multiple settings (outpatient, rehab, and inpatient areas) after being oriented and deemed competent for that patient population
