About The Position

The Speech Pathologist II is an experienced therapist capable of independently adapting interventions to meet specific patient needs. This role involves providing coverage across primary, hospital, rehab, and outpatient settings with minimal to moderate support. The Speech Pathologist II assumes basic leadership roles, demonstrating flexibility, good judgment, problem-solving, and collaborative work. Responsibilities include participating in department projects, providing in-service education, developing skills for student supervision with mentorship, and engaging in department-level research activities. Requirements

  • License (or licensure eligible) from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP)
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
  • Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a SLP (for continued employment)
  • Current CCC in SLP (for continued employment)
  • CPR certification (for continued employment)
  • Minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of experience
  • Previous clinical experience with evaluation/treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic/cognitive communication disorders and swallowing disorders
  • Previous experience performing swallow studies including MBS and bedside assessments
  • Previous experience planning and executing treatment
  • Masters Degree from an ASHA accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology
  • Completes required learning exchange courses

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of two (2) years of previous clinical experience
  • Previous experience with trach management as related to swallowing and communication disorders
  • Previous experience managing complex swallowing and/or communication, linguistic/cognitive disorders
  • Minimal novice experience with dysphasia including MBS and bedside swallow evaluations
  • Previous work experience in a similar practice setting (e.g. critical care, long term care, outpatient, etc.)
  • Previous experience with computer-based documentation systems

Responsibilities

  • Independently adapt intervention to meet specific patient’s needs
  • Provide coverage in their primary setting, but also as needed throughout the hospital/rehab/outpatient settings with minimal-moderate amount of support and training from mentors, peers or the manager
  • Assume basic leadership roles within the department
  • Demonstrate flexibility, exercise good judgment, problem solving and work collaboratively with colleagues
  • Participate in department projects or events in an efficient and productive manner
  • Attend educational activities
  • Provide in-service education to other staff
  • Begin developing the skills to provide student supervision with mentorship of an experienced student supervisor
  • Participate in research activities at the department level, being mentored as needed by a more experienced Speech Pathologist
  • Perform the following for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders: schedule frequency and intensity of therapy; select assessment instruments and administer assessment; interpret results; complete documentation; plan and carry out treatment strategies; develop long- and short-term goals; perform patient/family/staff education; report at patient/family/team conferences; and terminate therapy when appropriate
  • Manage or mentor and provide advice/guidance/training regarding clinical skills, professional practice, ethical behaviors, billing, caseload management, educational opportunities, documentation and patient care for patient issues or when requested by staff
  • Provide student supervision if deemed competent to do so by Department Manager or Student Program Coordinator (with CCC’s)
  • Provide services to multiple settings after being oriented and deemed competent for that patient population; this includes covering outpatient, rehab and inpatient areas in addition to SLP’s primary area of practice
