About The Position

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Actively trains new hires every aspect of the specimen processing and billing. Performs competency assessment of the new hires and sign off on the training document. Perform troubleshooting of test orders. Perform sending out samples to national reference laboratories. Perform complex pre analytical specimen receiving and processing and appropriately triaging specimens to various laboratory sections. Serve as a resource to care providers for test inquiries, collection information and status of processing.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or Higher in biology, chemistry or health science
  • Minimum two-year specimen processing experience from a similar hospital system
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Responsibilities

  • Sorts laboratory specimens and request slips for the accuracy of test orders and correct specimen types.
  • Input test orders in Lab Information System (LIS).
  • Prints and properly affixes identification labels to all incoming patient specimens.
  • Prioritizes incoming work, ensuring samples for stat testing are delivered to the appropriate laboratory section to maintain stated turnaround times.
  • Process multiple specimens from invasive procedures with drug administering on a series of time intervals.
  • Follows established protocols for receiving Christiana Care phlebotomy collected specimens, including reconciliation of tracking slips from other Christiana Care laboratories and outreach sites.
  • Follows established protocol for verification of PowerChart requisition/specimen match for Emergency Department and in-house nurse collected samples.
  • Utilizes patient demographic information such as name, date of birth, medical record number, financial number, physician, and encounter to ensure accurate identification.
  • Registers outpatient drop-off samples accurately in Soarian.
  • Selects the correct encounter and orders laboratory tests accurately in the LIS.
  • Accurately completes agency registrations for drop-off samples.
  • Perform audits daily to ensure the accuracy of test orders.
  • Handles all telephone requests in a courteous manner.
  • When appropriate, calls provider/nursing unit to clarify any confusion or question regarding requisitions or samples received.
  • Seeking technical guidance from supervisor or laboratory Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) when needed.
  • Follows all established LIS downtime procedures.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.
  • Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
