About The Position

Nemours is seeking a Specialty Nurse, PACU to join our Nemours Children's Health team in Wilmington, DE. The Perioperative Specialty Nurse is responsible for an area of specialized nursing practice, and indirect care to patients and their families in the perioperative settings. Utilizes the nursing process as a basis for providing and evaluating nursing care, coordinates and facilitates patient needs prior to day of surgery, offers education and instruction to patient guardians prior to day of surgery, and works collaboratively with the perioperative team to prepare the patient for surgery. Applies knowledge of growth and development, pathophysiology and family dynamics in delivery of care. Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Nursing
  • One to three years of experience

Responsibilities

  • Perform ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient progress and revision of interdisciplinary plan of care related to patient needs.
  • Identify patient/family need for further resources and initiates appropriate teaching and/or referrals.
  • Participate in patient phone calls.
  • Explain treatment regimens to patient/family after having discussed with the perioperative team.
  • Demonstrate ability to share clinical knowledge with other members of the health care team; works collaboratively with multiple service areas to coordinate tests, education, and pre-surgical needs as indicated.
  • Act as a liaison between families and members of the health care team.
  • Utilize specialized body of knowledge and technical skills in nursing practice related to subspecialty in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, hospital policy and protocol.
  • Participate in the development of standards of care for the specialty patient population.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the care of all ages; neonates, pediatrics, adolescents and adults.
  • Recognize and identifies own learning needs and responsibility for continual development; strives to increase knowledge and identifies goals for professional growth.
  • Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality/Process Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours Foundation.
  • Work collaboratively with OR admins coordinating times, scheduling plan, and ongoing adjustments as indicated with the OR schedule to allow for a fluid patient flow process throughout perioperative services every day.
  • Actively participated in nursing shared governance and unit specific meetings.
  • Diligently work to level-load, identify complex patients, identify cardiac patients, and communicate plans and needs to the appropriate perioperative teams.
  • Advanced communication skills, willingness to have challenging conversations with families as well as in depth screening of the patient’s medical record are required.
