About The Position

The specialist assigned to the student assistance room is responsible for the oversight, coordination, and implementation of behavioral supports connected to the Student Assistance Room (SAR) within the center-based, self-contained special education program. This role manages SAR operations; oversees students referred to SAR; ensures accurate behavioral data collection; supports staff in implementing behavioral systems; provides targeted classroom support for intensive behavioral needs; coordinates behavior-related communication with transportation staff; and leads crisis response, training, and post-incident debriefing to ensure consistent, safe, and effective behavioral practices.

Requirements

  • High School diploma required
  • Have the philosophy that all students can learn when provided with the appropriate instruction and that changing student behavior involves teaching them appropriate behaviors and changing our own behavior
  • Possess good mastery of basic academic skills to assist students with academic learning
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and be willing to assist others in other classrooms/situations when needed
  • Be receptive to feedback and pursue continuous improvement of effectiveness and increase achievement of student outcomes
  • Ability and willingness to take direction and constructive criticism and follow through with teacher plans and team decisions
  • Ability to remain objective, calm, and neutral when responding to student’s inappropriate behaviors
  • Ability to “actively listen” to students and relate to them in a positive, supportive, and reinforcing manner
  • Ability to set and maintain behavioral limits in a consistent manner
  • Willingness to follow through with program behavior management procedures such as time out, physical restraint and after-school detention, including staying after school with detained students and transporting them home (with another adult), when necessary
  • Have a valid driver’s license in good standing to transport students home (VBISD vehicle provided), when necessary.

  • Previous experience as a program assistant and / or experience working with children with emotional or behavioral problems preferred

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate effective behavior management and crisis intervention skills
  • Provide training, practice, and staff consultation to ensure the safe and effective implementation of Crisis Intervention
  • Manage the day to day operation of the Student Assistance Room (SAR) to ensure effective implementation, adequate daily supervision and management
  • Oversee and conduct school safety and security practices including: monitoring of building and grounds; safety procedures/practices; scheduled locker searches; student search/seizure, and practice schedule for safety drills
  • Serve as the district liaison with VBISD transportation department to arrange student transportation, seating, monitoring and addressing transportation problems and assist transportation personnel in effectively managing student behavior.

  • Demonstrate instructional skills to assist in providing educational programming, when needed.
  • Assist in physical management and crisis intervention with disruptive students throughout the school environment.
  • Serve as a CPI-certified trainer and provide required training and refreshers
  • Take directions and constructive criticism, consult and follow-through with teacher and team decisions, and communicate effectively with others.
  • Maintain records and collect data for student interventions
  • Ensure behavioral data for all students referred to SAR is collected, monitored, and accurately entered
  • Monitor and assist students with personal needs (i.e., toileting, dressing), as needed.
  • Substitute or help cover in the classroom, as needed.
  • Maintain flexible hours to assist in monitoring students serving after-school detention.
  • Have a valid driver’s license in good standing to transport students home (VBISD vehicle provided), when necessary.
  • Participate in IEPTs, screenings and other meetings, as requested.
  • Demonstrate ethical handling of confidential student and parent information.
  • Demonstrate reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Follow Van Buren ISD policies and procedures.
  • Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon time lines.
  • Perform additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the MCEC Principal
  • Provide classroom-based behavioral support for students with intensive or escalated behavioral needs
  • Serve as a lead member of the school’s crisis response team
  • Initiate, facilitate, and document debriefings following serious behavioral incidents
  • Assist in training classroom staff in the proper implementation of the behavioral sequence and intervention procedures
  • Train staff assisting in the Student Assistance Room, whether temporarily assigned or permanently placed
