Requirements

  • Knowledge of product and service vendor sources
  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures and practices
  • Ability to analyze varying product and service features, prices and qualities, and determine most cost-effective purchase for organization
  • Associate's or bachelor’s degree preferred or certification/licensing in a program of 18 months to 3 years duration in commercial work including purchasing and inventory management
  • 3-5 years of purchasing experience in the poultry, beef, seafood, or dairy industry
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and with business application software, purchasing, and resource planning systems
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills
  • Good time management and attention to detail
  • Excellent organization skills

Responsibilities

  • Reviews requisitions
  • Confers with vendors to obtain product or service information, such as price, availability, and delivery schedules
  • Selects products for purchase by testing, observing, or examining items
  • Estimates values according to knowledge of market price
  • Determines method of procurement, such as direct purchase or bid
  • Prepares purchase orders or bid requests
  • Reviews bid proposals and negotiates contracts within budgetary limitations and scope of authority
  • Maintains manual or computerized procurement records such as items or services purchased, costs, delivery, product quality or performance, and inventories
  • Discusses defective or unacceptable goods or services with inspection or quality control personnel, users, vendors, and others to determine source of trouble and take corrective action
  • Carries out warehouse and inventory and product information
  • Adheres to purchasing policies and processes
  • May approve invoices for payment
  • May expedite delivery of goods to users
