About The Position

Humane World for Animals, a global leader in animal advocacy and protection, is seeking a Specialist, Public Policy - Equine for the Companion Animals department. In this position you will help manage the programs and policy efforts of the Equine Protection section by liaising with internal and external stakeholders to achieve passage of policy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy or another related field, or equivalent work experience, required;
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in public policy, advocacy, nonprofit operations, or another related field required;
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities and issues of varying complexity, while meeting time sensitive deadlines and deliverables;
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • High level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional executive presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others internal and external to the organization;
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
  • Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment;
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);
  • Willing and able to travel and work a flexible schedule as necessary;

  • Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Researches and analyzes campaigns in the Equine Protection section including horse soring, horse slaughter, racing and overall humane treatment;
  • Supports campaigns by lobbying, developing materials including action alerts, fact sheets, communications to legislators, testimony, and other advocacy and outreach related materials;
  • Makes recommendations to leadership regarding legislative targets and campaign strategy. Advises advocates and policy makers on legislation;
  • Influences and builds relationships with a network of internal and external stakeholders in collaboration with other staff, including working nationally with coalition partners. Represents the organization and department at various forums, including professional meetings, conferences, and workshops;
  • Contributes writing and messaging for media coverage, articles, op-eds, social media, and other venues;
  • Performs other duties or responsibilities as assigned.
