About The Position

The Patient Safety Specialist is responsible for the identification and investigation of patient safety events including near misses, precursor and adverse events across all sites within the organization. Responsible for the daily review, collection, aggregation and analysis of patient safety events in the organizational safety event reporting system. This position is responsible for leading and facilitating patient safety initiatives impacting clinical and operational processes throughout the organization. Responsibilities include review and reduction of medical errors and other factors that contribute to patient harm. The Patient Safety Specialist must be able to think critically and possess analytical as well as creative thinking skills. Strong communication capabilities and the ability to foster multidisciplinary teamwork are essential to the position. The Patient Safety Specialist plays a key role in SJH Patient Safety Initiatives and in promoting a culture that emphasizes “Just Culture” and safety in all aspects of its operations. The individual in this role provides the tools, techniques and skills necessary for patient safety, outcomes measurement, process improvement as well as thorough and credible root and apparent “cause” analysis processes. Works with leadership, staff and physicians to provide a planned, systematic, organization-wide approach to identify, measure, monitor, and evaluate patient safety and improvement activities.
