About The Position

Using a status-neutral approach, the HIV Youth Services Specialist engages LGBTQIA+ youth, ages 13-24, through outreach, testing/screening, linkage, education, and supportive services. They conduct HIV/STI testing and screening for all youth, access to PEP/PrEP/Doxy-PEP and contraception, and linkage to care services through navigation support, facilitate evidence-based interventions, and connect youth to sexual health care and other essential resources – such as mental health care, housing support, Pantry services, medical appointment support, assistance enrolling in insurance, and more. Using a trauma-informed, sex-positive approach, the Specialist promotes risk reduction, prevention, and youth empowerment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in health education, public health, or related human services field.
  • Experience conducting HIV screening and test, along with providing results.
  • Experience completing and filing legal documents accurately and efficiently.
  • At least two years' experience with diverse population of adolescents in an urban setting, including knowledge of lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender and questioning youth from various cultures and backgrounds.
  • Experience facilitating group discussions and managing a variety of small and large group dynamics.
  • Experience planning and implementing health-specific programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including conflict mediation and public speaking.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction practices, trauma-informed care, and positive youth development models.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment when appropriate; strong decision-making skills.
  • Computer Skills: Strong with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Nice To Haves

  • Extensive knowledge of one or all of the following health and wellness related issues: Sexually Transmitted Infections, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Pregnancy Prevention, Substance Use, Nutrition, and Violence prevention.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish-English) skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform screening and assessment of youth within HMI and within the community using the GOALS framework to ensure they are offered routine HIV/STI testing and screening services, conduct follow-up navigation and case management support, provide appropriate referrals and linkage to supportive services.
  • Assist with improved access to biomedical prevention services for priority populations, including: a. PrEP/PEP/Doxy-PEP education. b. Linkage navigation to clinical sites providing PrEP/PEP/Doxy-PEP and other services. c. Follow-up activities including access to mental health services
  • Facilitate participation in on-site health /medical screenings, through use of community partners [HEAT, Callen-Lorde Mobile Medical Unit, & APICHA].
  • Coordinate and facilitate at least two 8-week evidence-informed interventions annually and monthly sexual health activations for LGBTQIA+ youth, ages 13-24, living in NYC.
  • Work closely with other HMI departments and staff to support ongoing programs and services.
  • Track youth member enrollment/activities and contractual requirements, and prepare reports and paperwork requested as needed by agency or funders.
