About The Position

The Special Education Self-Contained UP2 (Multi-Categorical 2) Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction, support, and services to students with disabilities as identified under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This position focuses on meeting the diverse learning, behavioral, social, and functional needs of students served under the multi-categorical designation, including learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, intellectual disabilities, and other health impairments. The teacher collaborates with general education teachers, administrators, families, and related service providers to ensure students receive individualized instruction and support that promote academic growth, independence, and success.

Requirements

  • Exceptional knowledge of the needs of special students.
  • Knowledge of IDEA regulations, IEP development, and specialized instructional strategies.
  • Knowledge needed to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and to speak effectively with elementary age students and/or employees in a school environment.
  • Knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of effective and innovative instructional and student evaluation techniques.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Application of percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations is required.
  • Strong skills in classroom management, collaboration, and differentiated instruction.
  • Strong communication skills with students, staff, administration, and the public.
  • Understanding a child’s behavior and dynamics.
  • Skilled in problem solving and patience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work and effectively attend to the special needs of exceptional children.
  • SC certification in MD, EMD, TMD or Multi-Categorical, or severe required with a strong GPA in relevant course work
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation
  • Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results must be provided

  • Experience with teaching special education students in a self-contained setting preferred
  • Experience with supporting others with classroom instruction and behavior management

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with federal, state, and district regulations.
  • Provide specialized instruction using evidence-based practices tailored to the unique needs of students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to adapt and modify curriculum, assessments, and classroom environments to support inclusion.
  • Manage classroom behavior using positive behavioral supports and individualized behavior intervention plans when needed.
  • Collect, analyze, and maintain student performance data to monitor progress and inform instruction.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians, keeping them informed of student progress and involving them in the educational process.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, eligibility determinations, and placement decisions.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation as required by district, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to instructional assistants or paraprofessionals supporting students with disabilities.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain knowledge of best practices in special education.
  • Enthusiasm for teaching disabled children.
  • Commitment to supporting the academic, social, and emotional growth of students with diverse needs.
