About The Position

Special Education Teacher Middle School Adaptive Skills Program Anticipated School Year 2026-2027 Job Goal(s): To provide an appropriate and quality education for identified students with disabilities, with an understanding of special education programming and case management for students with emotional disabilities.

Requirements

  • 2+ years teaching experience, preferably in programs providing Section 28 medical services.
  • BHP and SafetyCare Certification a plus
  • Bachelor's Degree in the appropriate field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current research, theory, and pedagogy related to students.
  • Displays a philosophy consistent with that of the school district.
  • ME DOE State Licensure (282-conditional considered)
  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in Special Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Masters Degree in related area preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily specialized instruction (delivery of services) using appropriate curriculum and supplementary materials to meet student's IEPs.
  • Perform all case management responsibilities for students with disabilities on their caseloads: Schedule IEP meetings with parents and team.
  • Follow the processes for room reservation, and subs for team members specific to the student’s school.
  • Inform the special services administrative assistant of the date and purpose of the meeting.
  • Request information from general education teachers and related service providers regarding student progress ahead of the meeting to ensure reports are available should a team member be unable to attend, and to have the necessary information for the written notice.
  • Ensure evaluations are sent to parents 3 days before the meeting.
  • Introduce and/or facilitate the IEP meeting.
  • Take pertinent notes and develop the written notice for the meeting.
  • Develop and send to parents progress reports of progress on goals quarterly, along with general education report cards.
  • Develop and send all appropriate special education documentation (written notice, IEP, eligibility documentation, consent documentation).
  • Communicate with parents of students on caseloads regarding progress or when requested by parents.
  • Plan a program schedule for students in consultation with general education classroom teachers as appropriate.
  • Provide training, direction, and supervision to education technicians regarding the educational program.
  • Organize and maintain the classroom structure to maximize instruction.
  • Maintain appropriate classroom management and safety procedures.
  • Monitor student behavior across all school settings and provide consultation and assistance as needed.
  • Administer, score, and summarize results of assessment measures given to students.
  • Establish and maintain a system of evaluating and documenting student progress.
  • Act as a resource by providing informal consultation to classroom teachers and other professionals as requested.
  • Establish and model positive and open relationships with students, school personnel, and parents.
  • Participate in staff development activities and school duties and responsibilities appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively with the specialists providing supervision and oversight for the provision of the Section 28 school based and specialized rehabilitative and community services.
