JOB GOAL: Support the Special Education teacher in implementation of an appropriate Special Education Program for special needs students. Work closely with one handicapped pupil on a regular basis to assist in providing them with the physical help, emotional support, and academic reinforcement needed to meet individual student’s educational plan. RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to the following: Work with individual student or small groups of students to reinforce the learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher Assist the teacher in reinforcing materials or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interest and ability Monitor and maintain established standards of student behavior in accordance with the Assertive Discipline Program Participate in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activities Assist with supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, and playground activities Assist with lunch, snack and cleanup routine Establish as fully as possible a supportive and empathetic relationship with the student(s) Assist the student(s) in such physical tasks as required by their handicapping condition Become familiar with the operation of instruction equipment, materials and office machines for preparing materials Follow directions of teachers to provide a positive program for students Receive instructional materials and equipment and distribute according to the teacher’s instructions Monitor student activities as assigned by the teacher Help maintain individual records for each child Alert teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers Participate in in-service training programs, as assigned Perform other related responsibilities efficiently and willingly, as assigned QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
