About The Position

The Special Education Compliance Officer performs professional work ensuring that all special education procedures are followed, and provides effective support to staff to ensure students with disabilities receive appropriate individualized special education services; and supports schools to ensure compliance with district, state, and federal special education regulations and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Must hold a Virginia license with an endorsement in special education, or be eligible to be licensed.
  • A minimum of five years of successful teaching experience in special education.
  • Knowledge of federal and state mandates and requirements that are related to the provision of educational services and supports for students with disabilities, and the policies and procedures of exceptional education programs.
  • Must have experience with writing, developing, and implementing Individual Education Programs (IEPs), Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), and complying with district, state, and federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of evidence-based practices and response to intervention; strong communication, organizational, and writing skills; and strong knowledge of classroom data use, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, colleagues, parents, and administration.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that all timelines for the special education process are followed
  • Ensures that data are collected and maintained for all special education reports and submit reports in a timely manner
  • Supports special education teachers in scheduling and coordinating timely special education meetings with families and other participants that include, but are not limited to, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) meetings
  • Supports special education personnel, and Building Administration to ensure that specially designed instruction, evidence-based practices, and compliance documents are aligned and services are delivered and monitored appropriately
  • Ensures that data is collected and maintained for all exceptional education reports and submits reports in a timely manner
  • Provides school-based and division-wide professional development on Special Education and related topics to staff and administration, as well as technical assistance on the IEP management system
  • Serves as chair to various special education-related meetings/teams- i.e. Eligibility/Re-evaluation Meetings; Manifestation Determination Review Meetings; etc.
  • Coordinates the eligibility process for assigned school, and ensure completion of components for the eligibility process
  • Conducts educational evaluations for students and develops reports and other relevant documentation
  • Serves as case manager for private day school students for assigned school, and prepares/presents cases for the Family Assessment Planning Team (FAPT)
  • Attends Special Education Central Office meetings, attends/leads school special education department meetings, and may serve as building level administrative designee for special education-related meetings
  • Maintains communication to provide information to supervisor, building administration, and related school personnel regarding Special Education matters
  • Monitors state and division-wide assessment processes for all students with disabilities, including alternate assessments, and collaborates with the school testing coordinator to ensure students’ testing needs are met
