About The Position

As an Interpreter at PHC, you will provide excellent customer service to patients, clients, providers, and staff. You will provide comprehensive simultaneous and asynchronous interpretation for non-English speaking people, their families and health center staff to ensure that language barriers do not impede the delivery of high-quality medical care, contributing to improved patient outcomes and satisfaction. You will support Patient Care Teams in following workflows to maximize patient and staff satisfaction, as well as clinic financial success. This role is essential in promoting understanding, trust, and effective healthcare delivery within the community served by PHC. This position typically works at PHC at Mercy Family Medicine Residency Clinic and is scheduled Monday - Friday 8 AM - 4:30 PM. You may occasionally be needed to cover other shifts or to work at other PHC clinics in Ames, Des Moines, and Marshalltown. Mileage reimbursement and/or an out of town travel bonus may apply.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 1 year experience as interpreter and translator.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English and familiarity with culture involved.
  • Basic computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office applications, EMR and internet-based application.
  • Ability to explain written documents in another language.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with ability to apply critical thinking.
  • Demonstrates professionalism with ability to remain calm in all situations and show empathy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Provides accurate and effective interpretation of the patient or client encounter, including medical or dental procedures. Interaction may occur in person and/or on the telephone.
  • Explains written documents, correspondence and brochures to ensure understanding of patients/clients.
  • Provides information and consultation to health center staff regarding cultural or ethnic issues.
  • Prioritizes patient appointments according to guidelines and achieves visit expectations of a minimum of 9 patient visits per session.
  • Refers patient concerns/issues to appropriate Patient Care Team member.
  • Performs other support duties as assigned.
