About The Position

The Virtual Arkansas Storyline Designer develops and integrates a cohesive narrative experience into digital course content to enhance student engagement and immersion. This role creates the overarching course story, complete with characters, settings, and plot arcs, and weaves narrative elements throughout the course at the module and lesson level. The Storyline Designer enhances existing content through storytelling context without altering the academic substance of the materials. This position works collaboratively with Designers, Developers, and SMEs to ensure the storyline supports learning outcomes and is implemented effectively in the LMS.

Requirements

  • Strong creative writing and storytelling skills
  • Ability to design cohesive narrative worlds, character arcs, and episodic story structures
  • Understanding of how narrative framing enhances learner motivation and engagement
  • Ability to revise or enhance presentation of content through story without altering instructional substance
  • Proficiency with digital tools and LMS environments (training provided)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and documentation skills
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new and emerging technologies, including AI-assisted tools
  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum); Master’s degree desired

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in creative writing, narrative design, storytelling, or related fields
  • Experience with online learning environments or digital course development
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging narrative experiences
  • Familiarity with accessibility considerations in digital storytelling and multimedia design

Responsibilities

  • Develop an overarching narrative world, setting, story arc, and cast of characters for the assigned course
  • Design module-level story beats, scenes, transitions, and connective narrative elements that align with course flow
  • Create narrative openings, closings, teasers, and continuity moments that enhance student motivation and immersion
  • Contextualize existing instructional content through story elements while maintaining instructional accuracy
  • Ensure narrative integration supports learning goals, accessibility expectations, and LMS constraints
  • Collaborate with Developers to implement narrative components into the LMS
  • Work alongside Designers, SMEs, and other project team members to maintain narrative consistency and tone
  • Use AI tools to generate, refine, expand, or revise narrative content and character interactions
  • Maintain a Narrative Reference Guide documenting characters, settings, plot arcs, terminology, and narrative continuity
  • Participate in project meetings and professional development as needed
  • Prioritize and adapt work to meet required deadlines
  • Abide by all Virtual Arkansas and applicable Arch Ford ESC policies and regulations
