About The Position

Through the Department of War (DoW) SkillBridge Program, GDIT offers transitioning service members the opportunity to gain hands-on training and professional experience as a Sonar Supervisor / Undersea Warfare Control Functional Segment (UCFS) Instructor Fellow, supporting anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and SONAR-related training operations in a mission-focused Navy training environment. In this Fellowship, participants will gain exposure to the day-to-day instructional, operational, and curriculum support activities that enable effective training of Officers and Sailors in SONAR operations, tactical watch stations, and associated weapons and sensor systems. The Sonar Supervisor / Undersea Warfare Control Functional Segment (UCFS) Instructor Fellow will work alongside experienced instructors, ASW Leads, and site leadership to support classroom and laboratory-based training tied to SONAR Supervisor, Situational Awareness Watch Operator (SAWO), Passive Acoustic Sensor Operator (ASO), Active ASO, Surface Common Airborne Undersea Sensor System Functional Segment (SCFS), and Undersea Warfare Control Functional Segment (UCFS) watch stations. Under the guidance of experienced staff, Fellows will build familiarity with the ASW SONAR Suite, mission planning, tactical oceanography, target motion analysis, firing point procedures, scenario-based tactical training, instructor support activities, and curriculum-related efforts associated with the operational employment of SONAR in an ASW mission environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical discipline OR the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications, training, or work/military experience.
  • 5+ years of specialized shipboard experience as a qualified SONAR Supervisor (NEC-V56B) on AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 variants.
  • Knowledge of advanced tactical SONAR system employment.
  • Familiarity with Target Motion Analysis, Firing Point Procedures, Tactical Oceanography, Range Prediction Systems, Acoustic Data Collection, Active Intercept, and Pulsed/Continuous Active SONAR.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic training environment and effectively interact with military, civilian, and contractor personnel.
  • Ability to support classroom and laboratory training with extended periods on your feet.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to support developmental training activities with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to support embarkation on a U.S. Navy ship underway, as required.
  • Active Secret security clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • On-site attendance required in San Diego, CA.
  • Fellowship duration and schedule aligned with SkillBridge program and training leadership requirements.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Has served at least 180 days on active duty (DoW SkillBridge Eligibility).
  • Can participate within the last 6 months of separation or retirement (DoW SkillBridge Eligibility).
  • Will receive an honorable discharge (DoW SkillBridge Eligibility).
  • Has taken any service TAP/TGPS (DoW SkillBridge Eligibility).
  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months (DoW SkillBridge Eligibility).
  • Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoW SkillBridge Program prior to start of the fellowship (DoW SkillBridge Eligibility).

Nice To Haves

  • At least 1 year of experience as an instructor in a Navy training environment.
  • Prior experience supporting SCSTC, Navy instructional environments, ASW operations, or tactical training activities.
  • Experience as a Trainer, Navy Instructor (NEC 805A), Surface Ship ASW Specialist (SSAS) (NEC V44B), Undersea Warfare Control Functional Segment (UCFS) operator, or Master Training Specialist.
  • Master/Afloat Training Specialist (MTS/ATS) qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting classroom and shipboard laboratory-based instruction related to SONAR operations and ASW tactical employment.
  • Assisting with training support for tactical watch stations including SONAR Supervisor, SAWO, Passive ASO, Active ASO, SCFS, and UCFS.
  • Supporting the integration of training systems such as Surface ASW Synthetic Trainer (SAST), AEGIS training systems, and Battle Force Tactical Trainer (BFTT).
  • Assisting with the coordination and delivery of ASW training materials aligned to customer training objectives.
  • Supporting course reviews, curriculum updates, and training gap analysis efforts.
  • Building familiarity with SONAR principles, environmental analysis, mission planning, tactical oceanography, target motion analysis, and firing point procedures.
  • Assisting with dynamic assessments related to Sailors’ technical and tactical proficiency on AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 SONAR variants and associated auxiliary equipment.
  • Supporting instructor evaluation activities during practice and certification topic/lab teaches.
  • Assisting with the development, testing, maintenance, and delivery of advanced tactical scenario-based ASW training materials.
  • Conducting research into new ASW training, educational, and multimedia technologies.
  • Maintaining awareness of relevant tactical capabilities and guidance as assigned.
  • Participating in special projects as required within the Fellowship learning environment.
  • Supporting travel, shift, or schedule requirements aligned with customer and training mission needs, as applicable.
