About The Position

Travelers is seeking an IT Architect to join our Enterprise Technology Solutions organization as we grow and modernize our technology landscape. Our Architects are responsible for designing and guiding the technology vision that enables business transformation - specializing in enterprise-wide solutions that bridge current capabilities with future possibilities. This strategic role requires deep expertise in application architecture, distributed systems, and cloud-native technologies, with a strong foundation in modern software engineering principles. The ideal candidate brings end-to-end systems thinking across complex, multi-system environments - and an emerging or demonstrated ability to apply AI to solve real business automation and engineering challenges. As the essential bridge between business strategy and technical implementation, this role directly impacts organizational agility, system integration, and the enterprise's ability to rapidly adapt and scale across a broad technology landscape.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in technology related field or equivalent with 6 years of demonstrated engineering experience or 2 to 3 years of technology architecture experience.
  • Recent hands-on architecture and/or engineering experience with modern technologies.
  • Experience with successful execution of modernizing technology initiatives.
  • Intermediate leadership skills with the ability to foster a supportive learning environment where team members can develop and grow along with a proven track record of self-motivation in identifying opportunities and tracking team efforts.
  • Experience working in an agile operating model.
  • Understanding of value creation and business capability models.
  • Able to identify and analyze current/future problems and opportunities, evaluate information to understand root causes, and explore alternative solutions for effective decision-making.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teammates to achieve mutually responsible results.
  • Experience exercising sound judgment, making decisions and committing to a position.
  • Effective verbal, written and listening communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
  • 4 additional years of architecture/software engineering experience.

  • Insurance technology experience preferred.
  • Contribute to target-state architecture definitions and multi-year technology roadmaps.
  • Support technology modernization initiatives, helping teams migrate from legacy patterns toward scalable, cloud-native architectures.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for architecture within a specific segment or domain for a single business unit.
  • Own architectural direction within a specific domain or business unit, with an eye toward enterprise-wide consistency and interoperability.
  • Design and guide application architecture using modern languages and frameworks (e.g., Java, Python, Go, Node.js), with a focus on clean, scalable, maintainable patterns.
  • Architect distributed, multi-system solutions - spanning microservices, event-driven architectures, APIs, and cloud-native platforms - ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance end-to-end.
  • Lead hands-on prototyping and proof-of-concept work to evaluate emerging technologies and validate architectural approaches.
  • Define integration patterns across heterogeneous environments, including modern digital platforms and, where applicable, legacy system interfaces.
  • Contribute to defining target state technology architecture and roadmaps.
  • Conduct hands-on prototyping and technology proof of concepts.
  • Partner in the execution of proof of technologies.
  • Contribute to target state architecture and roadmaps.
  • Support technology modernization initiatives.
  • Help minimize technical debt through continuous transformation.
  • Build foundational relationships and encourage buy-in.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
