Transport collected materials safely and efficiently to designated facilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Possess a valid Texas CDL Class B (or A) with air-brake endorsement at time of hire and maintain throughout employment.
  • Two years of recent CDL driving experience.
  • Current or able to obtain a DOT Medical Certificate before start date.
  • Meets UT System Policy UTS157 driver eligibility standards and maintains an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Ability to begin work at 4:30 a.m. and work overtime, weekends, and holidays for football or special events.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull 50 lbs frequently and 75 lbs occasionally; climb in/out of truck cabs and bodies; work outdoors year-round around noise, odors, rodents, broken glass, and moving equipment while wearing PPE.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years of CDL experience operating rear-load refuse equipment in municipal, university, or commercial collection.
  • Experience handling T-handle dumpsters and cart-based collection systems.
  • Familiarity with Routeware or similar onboard route-tracking software.
  • Strong customer-service skills and basic computer/smartphone literacy.

Responsibilities

  • Operate Class B commercial vehicles with air brakes on assigned campus routes to collect landfill, recycling, and compost.
  • Service 1.5-yard dumpsters and 96/64-gallon carts and deliver the materials to designated landfill location.
  • Perform and document DOT-compliant pre- and post-trip inspections.
  • Report defects and coordinate repairs with supervisor.
  • Use Routeware tablets to follow routes, record exceptions, and close out work orders.
  • Complete basic digital forms and communicate with supervisors using a smartphone.
  • Deliver, place, and retrieve containers.
  • Maintain clean, organized corrals and sweep collection areas as needed.
  • Interact professionally with building managers, custodial staff, and event leads.
  • Respond promptly to service requests and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Follow all safety policies and wear assigned PPE.
  • Participate in safety meetings and required training.
  • Document collection weights, disposal sites, and incident reports accurately.
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with University personnel.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support Solid Waste & Recycling operations.
  • Assist with campus-wide cleanup projects, special events, and cross-shop support within Facilities Services when needed.
