About The Position

This position is accountable for supervising the production and inspection of all miscellaneous materials used in construction projects. Miscellaneous materials includes precast concrete products, restressed/precast concrete products, plastic pipe, chemicals, reinforcing bars and other items. This position performs complex and diverse tests of all material submitted to the district Geotechnical Laboratory. This position is responsible for the maintenance and inventory of all test equipment used by the district Geotechnical Laboratory and other testing equipment that may be used to perform required job duties. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Soils and Miscellaneous Products Specialist. Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years of engineering experience.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest.
  • The employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
  • Certification in Aggregate Technician and the ability to obtain PCI I and II as well as IDOT S-33 and S-34 certification within 12 months of hire date.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Extensive travel of approximately 20,000 miles per year with the possibility of overnight stays.
  • Overtime.
  • Heavy/repetitive lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Outdoor work in a variety of conditions.
  • Requires successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation, a pre-employment physical examination, a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules the inspection of facilities and testing of samples according to priorities.
  • Ensures accuracy, reliability and punctuality of soil test reports and reports the results to the district Geotechnical Engineer.
  • Ensures materials produced at various manufacturing facilities are tested and approved prior to shipment and performs quality assurance (QA) inspections at precast concrete facilities.
  • Advises production facilities on problems and when applicable recommends solutions.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records on materials.
  • Maintains and calibrates test equipment and associated documentation.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
