Software Engineer (SWE), Level 3

Bitwise•Columbia, MD

About The Position

We are looking for a skilled and forward-thinking Software Engineer to join us at the cutting edge of AI-driven systems development in Columbia, MD. In this role, you will build and advance an agentic platform designed to power intelligent, autonomous workflows — the kind of work that directly shapes how agents operate, learn, and deliver impact in complex national security environments. You will collaborate closely with cyber analysts to translate real operational challenges into effective technical solutions, integrating diverse data sources and external APIs using MCP tools to enable scalable, seamless system interoperability. Your hands-on development work will span agentic primitives — skills, prompts, and subagents — as you help create adaptive, context-aware capabilities that matter in production every single day. This is not a build-it-and-forget-it kind of role. You will be maintaining and evolving a production-grade platform, working directly with key stakeholders, and identifying high-impact automation opportunities that improve how analysts do their jobs.

Requirements

  • 12 years of software development experience, or 16 years in lieu of a B.S. in a technical discipline
  • An active TS//SCI clearance with polygraph is required for this role
  • Strong Python proficiency with hands-on experience building and maintaining production applications that serve hundreds to thousands of users
  • Solid understanding of AI development concepts, including prompt engineering, context management, structured outputs, and tool/function calling
  • Experience designing and implementing real-time analytics pipelines using Apache Kafka for stream processing and Elasticsearch for indexing and querying
  • Experience developing resilient, scalable stream processing applications using modern messaging and event-streaming platforms
  • Experience leveraging AI coding assistants for code generation, refactoring, debugging, and automation
  • Ability to build tools and agentic workflows within modern frameworks such as PydanticAI, Langgraph, and DeepAgents

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with agentic workflows and multi-agent orchestration
  • Background in cybersecurity or familiarity with security operations workflows
  • Experience managing deployments in AWS Cloud with Kubernetes
  • GitLab CI/CD automation
  • Experience with retrieval systems, including RAG, vector databases, and semantic search
  • Ability to analyze cybersecurity-related datasets such as network traffic and OS events
  • Knowledge of end-to-end SIGINT collection and analysis systems
  • Experience with production CNO capabilities and operations
