Title and Summary Software Engineer II Overview: Mastercard’s Graphite team within the Business & Market Insights Platform Engineering (BMIPE) is seeking a Software Engineer II who is passionate about working deeply within a design system and creating tooling that accelerates the developer experience. The ideal candidate will craft an exceptional development workflow for engineers using our design system and design solutions that can flexibly support a wide range of front end architectures. You will build reusable components that enable teams to ship accessible, modern, and performant applications. In addition to core design system engineering, you will also work with complementary technologies that support the ecosystem. This includes using Storybook to deliver high quality code examples and consumer focused documentation, as well as leveraging Mixpanel and other analytics tools to gather insights that help us better understand usage patterns and continuously improve the developer and customer experience. The Graphite team focuses on building and evolving a comprehensive full-stack design system that enables teams across Mastercard to deliver modern, accessible, scalable, and high-performance front-end experiences. Our goal is to empower product teams to build consistent user interfaces quickly by providing reusable components, tooling, and clear development This is a hybrid position based in Arlington, VA, requiring three days per week onsite.

Requirements

  • Full stack development experience with hands-on experience or familiarity with modern front-end development, particularly JavaScript/TypeScript and React.
  • Interest in design systems, component libraries, or reusable UI development.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Storybook, Figma, or NPM is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of web accessibility standards (WCAG, ARIA) or interest in learning them.
  • Familiarity with front-end testing tools or frameworks.
  • Interest in learning how front-end systems integrate with broader full-stack architectures.
  • Curiosity about emerging trends in front-end development and developer experience.
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional and global teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, or related field. Equivalent practical experience may also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to building reusable React components that are flexible, responsive, accessible, and performant.
  • Support the development and maintenance of the Graphite design system used by multiple product teams.
  • Assist in developing tools and resources that improve the developer experience for teams using the design system.
  • Collaborate with engineers and designers to build scalable and modern front-end solutions.
  • Help create and maintain documentation, examples, and implementation guidance for internal teams.
  • Apply front-end engineering best practices, including component architecture, accessibility, and performance optimization.
  • Support product teams adopting the design system by helping troubleshoot issues and sharing implementation guidance.
  • Contribute to the software development lifecycle, including planning, coding, testing, and deployment.
  • Continuously learn and explore new technologies that improve development workflows and user experiences.
