The Oncology Social Worker provides cancer patients and their families with comprehensive psychosocial support services and relevant counseling (crisis, adaptation, rehabilitation, bereavement, etc.).

Requirements

  • A Master’s Degree in social work from an accredited school of social work.
  • Social Work License (LSW) required.
  • A minimum of three years experience in an acute care oncology setting required.

Nice To Haves

  • Oncology Social Worker Certification (OSW-C) preferred or obtain within 3 years of hire date.
  • Individual and group cancer counseling experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts comprehensive and ongoing psychosocial assessment and intervention for individuals with cancer and their family members.
  • Facilitates referral/access to community agencies, support services, and programs.
  • Provides short term counseling for patients and/or family members.
  • Provides guidance in accessing resources for practical needs such as transportation, insurance, financial assistance, disability, medical leave, durable medical equipment, personal care, etc.
  • Collaborates with the Palliative Care team to provide psychosocial support across the continuum.
  • Coordinates Distress Screening throughout the network cancer centers and provides necessary follow up, assessment, intervention and referral in response to screenings.
  • Functions as an advocate/liaison for patients, families, physicians, and members of the health care team.
  • Facilitates specialty related support groups.
  • Participates in community and staff education events.
  • Participates in program development for new programs/groups.
  • Communicates with health care team members across the continuum.
  • Maintains responsibility for own professional development through active participation in in-services and/or continuing education programs.
  • Takes an active role in QA/QI.
