About The Position

Over a century ago, NewYork-Presbyterian/Westchester Behavioral Health Center introduced the world to moral, humanistic psychiatric care. They were the first behavioral health facility to be recognized as a Planetree Designated Patient-Centered Hospital with Distinction and a recipient of Magnet from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Today, the hospital continues to use compassionate, evidence-based practices in its top-ranked Psychiatry program. Social workers at NewYork-Presbyterian provide services to patients of all ages – from children to adults – who are admitted to the hospital or seen on an out-patient basis. As part of the health care team, professional social work staff helps patients and families understand and cope with medical, psychological, and social issues related to their illness. This specific role involves working on a 17-bed acute psychiatric eating disorder unit, helping individuals with eating disorders work toward recovery in a comfortable and supportive environment. This is a mixed-gender unit serving adolescents and adults, benefiting from the expertise of faculty members from two world-renowned academic medical centers. The goal is to help patients achieve and maintain healthy eating habits and a healthy weight. The position also includes time working in a general psychiatric unit. This is a full-time day shift position located at NewYork-Presbyterian/Westchester Behavioral Health Center.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW)
  • Licensed Masters Social Work (LMSW) by the state of NY within 1 year of hire
  • Limited Permit (must supply exam date prior to start of employment)
  • Fieldwork or previous experience in a psychiatric setting
  • Form a therapeutic relationship with patients and maintain a neutral therapeutic stance
  • Knowledge base of bio-psychosocial model, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV (DSM-IV) diagnoses, criteria for treatment of different diagnoses in an acute care setting, behavioral risk factors and of the impact of mental illness upon individual and family functioning
  • Competency in individual, family and group treatment modalities and treatment techniques appropriate to an inpatient treatment setting
  • Conduct initial evaluations and psychosocial assessments and to establish individualized and measurable treatment goals
  • Knowledge base of community and discharge planning resources and processes
  • Effective organizational skills to manage clinical, discharge planning and documentation requirements within assigned LOS of inpatient hospitalization
  • Communicate effectively and to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team; demonstrated self-awareness to identify learning needs and capacity to apply supervisory feedback into practice
