About The Position

Serves as an Intern in a School of Medicine Department. Duties and responsibilities may vary based on the department and specific focus of the work. Under the direction of the Medical Director for Emory's Developmental Progress Clinic (DPC), the Social Work Intern will provide emotional support and psychosocial counseling to patients. Assist in a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care. May identify discharge needs and arrange for comprehensive services for patients following discharge from the hospital. Perform related responsibilities as required. During the course of the internship, the Intern will build on previous coursework through hands-on experiences in medical social work utilizing the “See One, Do One, Teach One” model. About the Developmental Progress Clinic The Developmental Progress Clinic (DPC) has been in existence for over 30 years, providing direct clinical follow-up services to patients of Emory Regional Perinatal Center's neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) after NICU discharge. The criteria for follow-up by this program can be found here. DPC’s multi-disciplinary team of medical and developmental specialists provide a variety of outpatient services with goals of prevention, detection and early treatment of developmental challenges associated with early neonatal illness. Children at highest medical risk are followed for up to five years from hospital discharge.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in social work, psychology or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Must be completing a Masters degree in social work, psychology or a related field or be a recent graduate.
  • Eligible applicants must attend or be a recent graduate of a MSW program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Responsibilities

  • Provides emotional support and psychosocial counseling to patients.
  • Assists in a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
  • May identify discharge needs and arrange for comprehensive services for patients following discharge from the hospital.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.
  • On-site presence during Emory’s Developmental Progress Clinic (DPC) focused on developmental follow-up of NICU graduates ages 0-5 years of age.
  • Duties during clinic will include resource connection, counseling, education and psychosocial support.
  • Participate in the Atlanta Regional Perinatal Center Region Bridge Program activities, which support parents of DPC families at all Atlanta region Department of Public Health locations by providing services within the scope of social work.
  • Support the Atlanta Region DPC Quality Improvement projects as reported to the Department of Public Health annually by providing services within the scope of social work.
