Essential Functions: Maintains and grows a profitable portfolio of new and renewal small business within assigned territory and underwriting authority, aligned with EMC’s Small Business Underwriting strategy. Applies advanced underwriting judgment and expertise in coverage forms, rating plans, and underwriting guidelines to effectively select, evaluate, and price individual risks. Ensures pricing adequacy through accurate classification and data‑driven decision‑making while proactively managing portfolio performance. Prioritizes and manages workload to balance quality, efficiency, and responsiveness, consistently meeting service level agreements while supporting business objectives and agency needs. Builds and sustains agency relationships across assigned territory, prioritizing high‑potential small business agencies to support profitable growth and market objectives. Delivers responsive, consultative customer experiences, striving to exceed established service level expectations. Collaborates closely with sales and cross‑functional business partners to ensure aligned communication, consistent service delivery, and effective execution of agency strategies. Proactively engages assigned agencies to identify and develop new business opportunities, provide meaningful training support, and deepen long‑term, productive partnerships. Advances underwriting proficiency by remaining current on best practices, coverage forms, rating plans, and guidelines, while engaging in industry‑specific training to deepen insight into the small business marketplace. Serves as a technical resource to small business team members, sharing knowledge and supporting consistent, high‑quality underwriting practices. Engages in agency planning and review activities in partnership with sales and business unit partners, monitoring agent performance and providing strategic, actionable feedback to support achievement of annual objectives. Monitors agency input and industry developments to generate market‑informed insights, influencing coverage and underwriting recommendations through partnership with underwriting leadership and cross‑functional teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in insurance or business administration, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Three years of experience in commercial lines underwriting or related experience
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and negotiating skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently
  • Ability to maintain high standards of professional competence
  • Strong ability to effectively communicate products, procedures, business planning, and system information necessary to positively influence production within assigned territory
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media
  • Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak in front of others
  • Occasional travel; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if driving

Nice To Haves

  • Insurance designations, such as CPCU or CIC preferred
  • Strong presentation skills preferred
