About The Position

United Community is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Small Business Underwriter III to serve as a key partner in the shared risk management responsibilities between the sales force and risk management. This role is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and making credit decisions on new and existing Small Business Banking loan relationships within the Bank’s portfolio. The Small Business Underwriter III plays a critical role in balancing the Bank’s profitability goals with sound risk management practices, providing expert guidance in credit analysis, structuring, and pricing while supporting effective portfolio management strategies.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of banking experience, preferably in credit analysis or loan review.
  • Minimum of 3 years of direct experience in Commercial or Business Banking lending and risk management, including interaction with line sales objectives.
  • Demonstrated strength in both quantitative and qualitative credit analysis.
  • Thorough understanding of the regulatory framework governing Commercial Banking.
  • Working knowledge of UCB Bank operating systems, loan policies, and procedures.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and time management skills.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Independent decision-maker with a positive, pro-business attitude.
  • Self-motivated and self-disciplined with the ability to function without daily oversight.
  • Demonstrated team-oriented mindset with a commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Willingness to participate in all required compliance training, including Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering and internal/external development programs.
  • Must be able to pass a background and credit check.

Responsibilities

  • Review, analyze, and make credit decisions on new, renewed, and modified Small Business Banking loan requests within delegated authority.
  • Serve as an advocate and trusted resource for the sales team by supporting complex relationships with multiple entities and guarantor structures.
  • Provide initial credit decisions and recommend strategies for transactions exceeding delegated authority to the Small Business Group Underwriting and Portfolio Manager.
  • Execute thorough underwriting analyses, including financial statement review, cash flow analysis, collateral evaluation, and risk assessment.
  • Complete reviews of monitoring and compliance standards, including financial covenants, covenant breaches, and required financial reporting for complex credits.
  • Execute pricing matrices to ensure appropriate risk-adjusted returns and alignment with target pricing goals.
  • Provide insight on monthly portfolio management reports (e.g., past dues, upcoming maturities, covenant tracking) to minimize credit exceptions.
  • Ensure timely turnaround of loan requests to support internal partners and meet client needs while maximizing profitability and minimizing risk.
  • Proactively identify cross-sell opportunities to deepen and anchor client relationships.
  • Aggressively identify and recommend strategies to manage or resolve weak loan relationships.
  • Provide on-the-job training and guidance to Account Managers, trainees, and analysts as needed.
  • Promote collaboration, diversity of thought, and continuous improvement across the organization.
  • Act as a role model and advocate for change, supporting evolving business and risk management practices.
