About The Position

The Sleep Technologist performs a variety of sleep studies to diagnose the type and extent of disorders. Works closely with patients to diagnose and determine therapy for a variety of disorders related to sleep. Scores sleep data and prepares raw data for the physician and/or research interpretationmay. If a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and Sleep Technologist, then may function in a dual capacity (as needed) by performing job duties of a Registered Respiratory Therapist. While functioning as RRT, all independently performed activities must be under direction of an attending physician or CMO.

Requirements

  • Generally requires 2 years or more of related experience.
  • Associate degree in Polysomnography Technology is preferred.
  • Registered Sleep Polysomnographic Technologist (RSPGT) certification is Required.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.

  • Additional certification as Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all types of sleep disorder testing, including set-up and performance of nocturnal polysomnograms (PSGs) on most age groups.
  • Prepares the laboratory and bedrooms as needed to perform overnight data collection.
  • Cleans equipment on a daily basis.
  • Clearly explains procedures to and establishes rapport with all patients.
  • Maintains a comfortable and controlled laboratory environment during the entire time the patient is present.
  • Summons qualified medical/surpervisor personal immediately if an emergency situation develops. Alerts immediate supervisor of problem situations and takes preventive and corrective action.
  • Appropriately utilizes and troubleshoots diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
  • Diagnoses and corrects minor deficiencies and immediately reports major technical malfunctions.
  • Adapts to changing workloads and completes assigned tasks within an expected timeframe.
  • Demonstrates the ability to understand and react effectively to the unique needs of the adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
  • Participates with in-service training programs in and outside of the department.
  • Demonstrates effective and efficient care through clinical competencies at least annually.
  • Provides assistance with daytime sleep studies, such as multiple sleep latency testing (MSLT).
  • To monitor machines and assist sleep specialists with patient assessments and physiological monitoring during studies.
  • To also help with the diagnosis, management and prevention of sleep disorders.
  • Must demonstrate working knowledge of polysomnography, Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT), oximetry and administration of supplemental O2, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP and/or Bilevel) studies, and the basics of Sleep Medicine.
  • Able to take patient vital signs accurately & recognize cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Ability to perform all duties as a Sleep Technician/Technologist in accordance with AASM, & Sleep Center Quality guidelines.
