About The Position

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Superintendent III at Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area for the Office of Land Management. This position manages the operations at Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area and Anderson Lake which includes supervising a large staff, maintenance of the sites grounds, facilities, and equipment, and coordinates waterfowl hunting program. The Sanganois SFWA is a popular destination for hunting and birdwatching. It covers approximately 10,360 acres and is situated near the merge of the Sangamon and Illinois River. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is charged with preserving, protecting and promoting Illinois’ natural and cultural resources, overseeing water, wildlife, wetlands and oil wells, parks, historic sites. The Office of Land Management (OLM) oversees nearly 400 individual parcels of land and institutes a wide variety of programs and activities advocating outdoor recreation through sustainable use, conservation, and preservation. OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.

Requirements

  • Knowledge, skills, and mental development equivalent to a bachelor's degree in park and recreation administration, or natural resource administration, or in museum administration, history, American studies, or archeology
  • Four years of supervisory experience in managing an outdoor recreational park, natural public area, or a cultural/historic site or museum
  • Completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history
  • Appropriate, valid Class A Commercial driver's license with airbrakes designation
  • Ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate
  • Ability to obtain pesticide applicator's license within 6 months of employment
  • Ability to obtain Burn Boss certification within 1 year of employment
  • Ability to work under adverse environmental conditions on a year-round basis
  • Ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and material utilization in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds
  • Ability to lift, carry and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds
  • Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certifications within 6 months of employment
  • Awareness of revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45
  • Ability to file a Statement of Economic Interest and Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest

Nice To Haves

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including site interpretation, natural and/or cultural resource management, structural grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, and outdoor recreation programs.
  • Working knowledge in waterfowl and/or wetland management.
  • Two (2) years of experience in assigning and supervising the work of assistants and staff members.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in budget forecasting, analysis, and/or monitoring.
  • Three (3) years of extensive knowledge of farm operations including equipment maintenance and operation, seeding, chemical and fertilizer application.
  • Burn Boss Certification (Wildland firefighter 130/190).
  • One (1) year of welding experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the operation of the Sanganois SFWA and Anderson Lake, supervising a large staff engaged in site operations, maintenance, and interpretive activities
  • Directs and participates in the preparation and maintenance of site operational and financial records and reports
  • Directs and participates in the maintenance and improvements of site grounds, facilities, and equipment
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements farming activities and other programs compatible with the waterfowl hunting program
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with media, interested groups, and individuals
  • Understands and explains agency policies, rules, and regulations to site visitors
  • Reports and/or responds to emergency situations such as fires, flooding, accidents, road closures, severe storms, and police/fire department assistance
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
