About The Position

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Superintendent II at James C. Helfrich Wildlife Propagation Center for the Office of Land Management. This position not only supervises but will prepare and maintain the site's operation, monitors pheasant rearing, assists in the hunting program on site, and facilitate day use activities. The Site Superintendent will live in site house or within 10 miles of the game farm and will be on a rotating on-call schedule for weekend/weeknights. James C. Helfrich GPC is also known as Edward R. Madigan State Park, a 974-acre site along Salt Creek south of Lincoln in Logan County. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is charged with preserving, protecting and promoting Illinois’ natural and cultural resources, overseeing water, wildlife, wetlands and oil wells, parks, historic sites – and everything in between. The Office of Land Management (OLM) oversees nearly 400 individual parcels of land and institutes a wide variety of programs and activities advocating outdoor recreation through sustainable use, conservation, and preservation. The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials. OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to a bachelor's degree in park and recreation administration, or natural resource area administration, or in museum administration, history, American studies or archeology
  • Requires three years of supervisory experience affording training in various facets of managing an outdoor recreational park, or natural public area, or a cultural/historic site or museum
  • Ability to pass background check
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to live in site house or within 10 miles of game farm
  • Willingness to be on call 24 hours a day for animal welfare and hatching seasons
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Ability to obtain pesticide operator’s license within 6 months of employment
  • Ability to work under adverse environmental conditions on a year-round basis
  • Ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds
  • Ability to lift, carry and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds
  • Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain
  • File a Statement of Economic Interest as required by the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act

Nice To Haves

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including pheasant propagation, animal handling, structural grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, and outdoor recreation programs
  • Two (2) years of experience in the breeding, egg collection, and incubation of poultry
  • Two (2) years of assigning and supervising the work of subordinates
  • Two (2) years of experience in applying appropriate levels of knowledge in problem solving situations encountered in the performance of duties and responsibilities
  • Two (2) years of experience in evaluating program effectiveness and to making recommendations on policies and procedures
  • Prefers a Bachelor's in Agriculture or Animal Science or equivalent years of experience in poultry production
  • Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and/or carpentry trades to make repairs on site

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and participates in the preparation and maintenance of the site's operation and financial records and reports
  • Serves as full-line supervisor
  • Monitors and utilizes professional expertise in the evaluation of pheasant rearing methods
  • Establishes and maintain effective working relationships with the media and interested groups or individuals
  • Monitors, facilitate and assist in the hunting programs on the site, including large or small game hunts
  • Coordinates and facilitates day use activities on the park
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
