About The Position

SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Simulation Center Directors and Business Manager, assists the Simulation Center staff in the day-to-day operation and strategic development of high-fidelity medical simulation scenarios focused on medical error prevention. Assists in the development and programming of medical simulation courses for healthcare providers (hospital staff, resident and attending physicians, medical students). The Specialist contributes to simulation center operations and the medical training of healthcare providers as follows:

Requirements

  • Level of knowledge generally acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field or equivalent experience.
  • Basic knowledge of medical emergencies and terminology is preferred.
  • Skills and abilities in computer use, setup and maintenance are required.
  • Knowledge of Win 2000, Win XP and Mac OS X computer systems are preferred.
  • Ability to learn and master system and proprietary software is required.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot A/V and computer simulation-related equipment.
  • Two years experience in a related environment is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Driving to various locations to perform ensuite simulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a clinical, medical, acute-care setting is preferred.
  • Such experience should demonstrate the ability to effectively plan and produce quality, innovative audiovisual programs.

Responsibilities

  • Operates computerized medical simulation mannequins.
  • Attains mastery of software, hardware characteristics and programming of medical simulations.
  • Operates basic simulation scenarios and coordinates audio-visual equipment requirements with other simulation staff during advanced scenarios.
  • Assists in development of high-fidelity medical simulation materials for courses conducted by the simulation center.
  • Assists in programming proprietary mannequin software and preparation of environmental cues for simulation scenarios.
  • Performs preparatory and cleanup duties on the simulation environment and equipment for medical simulation sessions.
  • Is responsible for acquisition, maintenance, cleaning and repair of simulation mannequins, support equipment, and medical supplies.
  • Acts as the primary point-of-contact with external vendors to fulfill and coordinate center equipment needs.
  • Provides basic safety assessment and simple modifications on new equipment acquisitions.
  • Acts as an interface with Brown University Health Information Services and is responsible for computer operations on simulation control PCs and audio-visual PCs. Specific tasks include software installation, operating system maintenance, backup and troubleshooting on simulation center PCs.
  • Assists in research studies requiring high-fidelity medical simulation scenarios.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with health care professionals and simulation instructors for course planning and execution.
  • Maintains simulation center informational website through contact with Information Technology Web Team.
  • Assists with facility tours and orientations as needed.
