About The Position

In your pivotal role as Simulation Education Specialist, you will develop and deliver healthcare simulation conducted by the Simulation Technologies Program, CELA, which includes courses at STP, in-situ courses at VUMC and offsite locations, as required. You will prepare, operate, repair, and troubleshoot low to high fidelity simulators, patient mannequins, virtual reality trainers and partial task trainers. You also will help develop curriculum in association with primary faculty and plan and coordinate program activities for medical students, graduate students, residents and/or fellows, allied health professionals, and nurses in accordance with program goals and objectives. Additionally, you will coordinate courses/events; maintain evaluation system; complete reporting requirements. [The labs include low to high fidelity simulators, patient manikins, and virtual reality trainings in response to risk reduction, quality, and safety initiatives]. Responsibilities

  • Operates Virtual Reality and Human Patient Simulator mannequins
  • Sets up individual clinical simulations, including simulators, clinical equipment, and "studio set" as required
  • Takes down equipment and materials used for simulation learning activities
  • Operates simulator during clinical simulations
  • Maintains knowledge of task trainers, human patient simulators, audiovisual systems, simulation technologies, and related applications
  • Works effectively with internal and external customers from different disciplines and levels of training
  • Develops and delivers medical simulation courses
  • Interacts and communicates with faculty to develop and implement educational activities.
  • Assists faculty in curriculum development
  • Reviews, tests, and revises scenarios to meet educational objectives
  • Develop and establish apprenticeship-training programs for simulation instructors in conjunction with the STP Director, Operations Manager and simulation faculty
  • Coach's faculty and staff in effective simulation techniques, simulation training technologies, and evaluating the learner's experience/ instituting appropriate refinements as essential
  • Assists with debriefing simulation sessions as related to teamwork and crisis management
  • Coordinates and conducts offsite, high fidelity, simulation experiences in conjunction with Director, Operations Manager and faculty
  • Train faculty and staff to run their own simulation learning experiences, and participate in related research
  • Researches, designs, and builds necessary props and simulator augmentations in support of simulation projects
  • Conducts needs analysis and researches commercially available solutions
  • Creates necessary items independently or as part of an engineering team
  • Installs, tests, calibrates, and maintains various simulation, medical equipment and computer hardware
  • Installation, testing, calibration and maintenance are completed according to manufacturing and industry-accepted guidelines and in a timely manner
  • Act as Level 2 Technical Support
  • Assist faculty and staff in the scheduling and proper use of equipment
  • Troubleshoot and perform preventive maintenance on computer hardware (both PC and Macintosh) and other electronic and mechanical equipment
  • Preventative maintenance completed according to manufacturers' guidelines and timeframes
  • Troubleshooting completed in timely manner, with the problem normally solved
  • Ensures necessary parts and equipment are available when needed
  • Maintain inventory database and restock supplies as needed
  • Order parts and equipment according to departmental and institutional guidelines
  • Contact vendors to obtain information on specifications, availability of parts, and price
  • Designs, creates, and updates educational video and web materials
  • Directs, shoots, and edits educational videos using principles of cinematography
  • Conducts all pre- and post-production activities as necessary, including scripting, storyboarding, editing, character generation, animation, special effects, etc.
  • Designs and maintains STP website and e-learning modules
