About The Position

Under direction of the Signs & Markings Supervisor, works independently, or in a team, to design, fabricate, install, and maintain a diverse variety of new and replacement signs, and to perform layouts, installations, and removals of various pavement markings. These areas encompass both public and airfield applications, interior and exterior environments, and require compliance with a variety of laws and regulations, such as FAA, TX-DOT, MUTCD, FHWA and Airport Board criteria. Work also involves design, fabrication, installation, and removal of various complex vehicle graphics. Work is highly specialized, involving the use of various computer-aided systems, and additionally requires the exercise of leadership skills on certain projects as directed by the Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience in sign fabrication and pavement marking, or related experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
  • Ability to pass a color vision deficiency test.
  • Ability to pass a medical physical examination.
  • Possession of a valid class B commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain one within twelve (12) months from the date of hire.
  • Must obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Airport Identification/Access Badge (badge) in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements in Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1500 et al., and DFW Airport’s Airport Security Program within thirty (30) days from date of employment and maintain qualification for a SIDA badge upon each badge renewal.
  • This is a Department of Transportation (DOT) designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass drug and alcohol tests prior to employment and to submit to drug and alcohol screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the DOT safety sensitive position.
  • This is a designated Essential Employee position as defined in DFW Airport’s Categories and Classifications Administrative Policy and Procedure. An essential employee is one whose attendance is required to maintain airport operations during an emergency or inclement weather situation.
  • Must be able to meet all initial and recurrent training requirements in accordance with Title 14 CFR part 139 and administrative Policy AO.014.01, Ground Vehicle Driver Training for Air Operations Area (AOA) within 30 days of assignment to a driving position and before being permitted to operate the vehicle without the direct supervision and presence of a co-operator qualified under this requirement.
  • Knowledge of the techniques and ability to operate tools and equipment used in modern sign fabrication, such as photographic process screen printing and computerized vinyl systems; such as Gerber Scientific Products and New Hermes.
  • Ability to lay out and install various types of pavement markings; including paints, raised markers, tapes and thermoplastic films.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State regulations for signing and marking public roads and airfields.
  • Knowledge of the FAA rules/regulations pertinent to working around commercial aircraft and ground support vehicles, in an airfield environment.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions in the area of assignment, including handling of hazardous chemicals, working in construction zones, working with oxygen/acetylene torches, steel shot blasters, propane gas torches, truck-mounted cranes, and around heavy amount of moving aircraft traffic.
  • Ability to use and care for tools and equipment of the assigned area.
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from specifications and drawings.
  • Ability to perform various mathematical and geometrical computations.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide work direction to, and maintain harmonious relations with, co-workers.
  • Ability to communicate clearly via two-way radios, using required FAA phonetic alphabet system to a variety of parties, such as other works, Public Safety personnel and FAA Control Tower Personnel.
  • Ability to work at various heights, using ladders and powered manlift equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, frequently exerting forces equivalent to lifting 50 lbs., and occasionally up to 100 lbs., safely and properly.
  • Must have a good private driving record: (a) no more than two (2) convictions of moving violations in the last 36 months and (b) no DWI convictions in the last 60 months.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, fabricates, and installs a variety of signs and markings, using a combination of drawings and verbal/written instructions, to satisfy current codes, laws and customer requirements.
  • Operates highly specialized graphics computers and equipment, such as New Hermes and Gerber Scientific Products systems to cut, engrave and rout various sign materials. This involves knowledge and applied skill in the use of various computer programs and platforms, such as Windows software, Adobe Illustrator and GSP Graphix Advantage. Final production involves design and fabrication.
  • Utilizes screen printing processes to fabricate various sign faces and utilizes cold and thermal/vacuum lamination processes to complete installation of sign faces to various sign substrates, such as aluminum, plastics, and wood.
  • Uses various precision drafting, geometric and mathematical processes in the design and fabrication of complex graphics, often within plus/minus .001 tolerances.
  • Operates and maintains a diverse fleet of large truck-mounted stripers and walk-behind stripers, utilizing both air-type and airless-type systems. Also involves supporting other operators with loading and cleaning of units, traffic control escorting and precision masking procedures. Uses computerized controls in the operation of the truck stripers. Follows strict rules and regulations, while operating in the presence of vehicles and aircraft, to maintain safety.
  • Operates a variety of pavement preparation/removal equipment, such as high-pressure water blasters, self-propelled shot blasters and gas-powered scarifier/grinders.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools, such as power post drivers, drills, riveters, etc., to install and maintain poles and signs.
  • Operates a truck-mounted aerial crane/manlift platform in the installation and maintenance of overhead signs.
  • Acts as a project leader, or assistant, as delegated by the Supervisor. While acting as a project leader, will coordinate efforts of additional support personnel that have been assigned to the task by the supervisor. Project leaders will perform all necessary tasks of the project; including setup, execution, completion and associated administrative details. In addition to written data records, they will utilize computerized departmental work orders and stock inventory systems presently operating under a Windows-based Oracle format.
