About The Position

WSDOT is currently seeking multiple Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 3s to join our team as senior-level experts supporting the state's transportation systems. In this role, you'll install, maintain, and repair the critical electrical, electronic, and communication systems that keep Washington's highways safe and moving - from traffic signals and highway lighting to advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems like ramp meters, cameras, weather stations, and variable message signs. You'll also work with communications infrastructure, power distribution systems, and underground utilities, ensuring everything operates reliably and in compliance with national, state, and local codes. Work is performed in all weather conditions along state routes and interstates with live traffic, working at heights exceeding 100 feet over live traffic or up to 600 feet above water on bridges; includes electrical work up to 480 VAC.

Requirements

  • Advanced Electrical and Electronic Diagnostic Skills: Senior-level experience in diagnosing and repairing electrical and electronic systems, including traffic signal systems, highway and illumination systems, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
  • Preventative Maintenance and System Upkeep: Proficient in scheduling and performing preventive and routine maintenance on electrical and ITS assets, including signal displays, illumination systems, and detection systems, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
  • Technical Collaboration & Mentorship: Ability to assist and support Electronic/ITS Technicians in troubleshooting and repair tasks; capable of leading or training less experienced staff in safe and effective electrical system operations.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.
  • Valid driver's license to operate state vehicles.
  • Class B CDL endorsement without air brake restriction OR ability to acquire within six (6) months for EESS 1 or 2 level.
  • Ability to distinguish colors for electrical and electronic maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to move, transport and place equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to move freely and navigate climbing stairs, ladder, inclines, uneven surfaces, and heights exceeding 100 feet over live traffic or up to 600 feet above water on bridges.
  • Ability to work after hours at night and weekends for scheduled and emergency situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Licenses: Journey Level Electrician (EL01, EL02, EL04, or EL07); Electronics Certification by Washington State CET or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET); Class A CDL endorsement; Washington State Flagging Card.
  • Underground Utility Location: Demonstrated ability to accurately locate, identify, and mark underground utilities using industry-standard detection equipment and methods.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct preventative maintenance for WSDOT traffic signal control cabinets and identify and repair traffic signal displays.
  • Perform underground utility locates (UUL); secure and repair motor vehicle knockdowns (KI's).
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical problems in control systems, including repairing changeable message signs, ramp metering systems, weather stations, variable message signs (VMS), data stations, and camera communications systems, including wireless and traffic signal systems.
  • Schedule and perform preventative maintenance on traffic equipment including but not limited to closed Traffic Signals, Electrical Services, Flashing Beacons, Illumination, closed circuit television (CCTV), Variable Message Systems (VMS) and data stations.
  • Adhere to established preventative maintenance protocols for each specific highway system.
  • Develop traffic control plans and submit them for previous and approval by the supervisor and CTCO.
