About The Position

The Shop Technician II position is primarily responsible for supporting forging and auxiliary operations in the Advanced Product Development (APD) Forge Shop. This includes working on die set-ups, billet spotting, fork truck and manipulator operation, and press operation, along with other duties related to forging operations on the press. The role also involves operating furnaces, performing heat treatment operations, band-saw and abrasive saw operations, and general housekeeping. While these are the main responsibilities, the incumbent is expected to possess the necessary skills and aptitude to cross-train in other laboratory functions such as metallography and mechanical testing. Primary duties encompass die setup and forging crew functions (billet spotting, nip operation, press operation), heat treat and forge furnace operations, operation of band saws and abrasive saws, support of APD program activities, adherence to housekeeping and safety procedures, developing and maintaining a good working knowledge of APD shop equipment and practices, and operating shop equipment like fork trucks and manipulators to meet process requirements.

Requirements

  • Mechanical aptitude is essential for success.
  • Computer literacy and basic skill with office software such as spreadsheets and word processors.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills to be successful in a small, cohesive team.
  • Fast learner and be able to operate responsibly with minimal supervision when necessary.
  • Flexible, versatile and able to cross-train in an R&D environment with changing requirements and demands.
  • Minimum associates degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years in an industrial or laboratory environment.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3 years of college or trade school
  • Forklift license and skilled at handling industrial equipment

Responsibilities
