About The Position

Ignite Achievement Academy is seeking a hands-on, engaging part-time Shop Teacher for the upcoming school year. This position is responsible for leading our woodshop program and providing students with meaningful, skills-based learning experiences in a structured and supportive environment. Class sizes at IAA are intentionally small, typically ranging from 5–8 students, based on individual student needs. Our students benefit from a highly individualized, supportive setting designed specifically for learners with special needs and learning differences. The Shop Teacher will design and deliver lessons that build practical skills such as tool safety, basic construction techniques, following multi-step directions, and completing hands-on projects. Instruction should be adapted to meet a wide range of abilities, with an emphasis on safety, engagement, and confidence-building. This position is located at our South Charlotte campus.

Requirements

  • Experience with woodworking - this is REQUIRED!
  • Associate's Degree.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for working with students with special needs
  • Stamina to actively engage with students throughout the school day and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Capability to perform tasks involving physical activities, including standing, walking, and bending
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferred
  • Valid teaching certification, preferred
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver personalized instruction tailored to the unique needs of each student in alignment with their academic plan, utilizing the provided curriculum.
  • Work closely with teacher assistants and support staff to provide continuous support and services.
  • Implement and monitor behavioral strategies to create a supportive and structured classroom environment that promotes positive behaviors and social interactions.
  • Develop, along with the Head of School, implement, and regularly update Academic Plans for each student, ensuring alignment with their specific goals and needs.
  • Conduct regular assessments to monitor student progress, adjust instructional methods as needed, and provide detailed reports on student achievements. Review data frequently and make adjustments, as needed.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with parents, guardians, and other stakeholders to support student progress and well-being.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in special education, speech support, and behavioral interventions.
