About The Position

Daifuku Airport America Corporation is a subsidiary of Daifuku North America a group company of Daifuku in Japan - the largest material handling company in the world. Our advanced systems move everything from car bodies at auto plants to luggage at airports to packaged goods at warehouses. We are known as experts in engineering, manufacturing, and servicing innovative automated materials handling systems including conveyors, automatic guided vehicles, automated storage & retrieval systems, and integrated controls. The company is currently seeking an experienced Shop Manager . The Shop Manager is responsible for managing all shop activities in a fast paced, unionized, manufacturing environment. The Shop Manager is responsible for leading multiple departments (Fabrication, Weld, Powder Coating, Wiring, Assembly and Shipping & Receiving), ensuring team safety, building maintenance, and training teams / allocating manpower; driving and implementing continuous improvement solutions to improve product quality and reach throughput and cost targets; and ensuring team morale.

Requirements

  • English Language — Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Engineering and Technology — Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Production and Processing — Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Time Management — Managing one's own time and the time of others.
  • Critical Thinking — Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

  • Read/identify/assess forms and correspondence.
  • Degree in Business, Operations, or Industrial Management.
  • 8+ years’ experience in a manufacturing (metal forming, welding, wiring and assembly).
  • Experience managing a workforce under a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control and cost.
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to build teams, motive staff, develop employee skills, and coach supervisors
  • Effective organization, written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with SAP (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Manages the Department Supervisor(s), ensuring their teams are well managed; supports recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees
  • Assigns duties, gives verbal and written instructions, and reviews work for conformance to quality and safety standards
  • Organize workloads and determine sequence priorities base on production schedule. Use KPIs and other metrics to monitor manufacturing efficiency and make adjustments to improve productivity
  • Coordinates daily with Production Control Department to forecast and adjust manufacturing schedules and determine outsourcing as needed to meet project schedules.
  • Ensure a safe workplace, leads the team to improve safety in the shop and enforce the use of mandated safety tools and procedures.
  • Coordinate daily with the quality department to manage quality standards, including monitoring scrap rates and minimizing waste.
  • Provides technical guidance to team members and consults with other resources when needed
  • Reviews labor charges, labor estimates purchase requisitions, and department schedules
  • Ensure shop equipment operates safely and is maintained at basic condition levels, maintaining preventive/proactive maintenance activity schedules and adjusting as needed
  • Motivating employees, be a positive source of influence, lead by example and encourages autonomous work by empowering employees
  • Develop and deliver training and development plans to ensure succession planning and retention
  • Actively participate and lead improvement project activities centered on Safety, Cost, Quality, Throughput, and waste reduction opportunities.
  • Recommend investments in new machinery and changes to plant / process layouts.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
  • Other Duties as assigned
