About The Position

At GFL Environmental, the Shop Foreman is the backbone of our operational reliability. You will lead a team of technicians in a fast-paced environment, ensuring our fleet of heavy-duty collection trucks, yellow iron, and support equipment is safe, compliant, and ready for the road. You are a hands-on leader who balances technical "wrench time" with the administrative discipline required to manage one of the largest fleets in North America. The Shop Foreman must be dependable, enthusiastic, organized, and capable of consistently performing to meet established standards and deadlines

Requirements

  • Advanced mechanical and troubleshooting skills across a wide range of diesel engines, hydraulics, and complex compaction equipment.
  • Deep familiarity with the Vehicle Inspection program and DOT safety regulations.
  • Strong computer skills, specifically with Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly master fleet management software (TMW).
  • Clear, concise communication skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and high-pressure deadlines.
  • Valid driver’s license required (Class A or B CDL preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Manage and mentor service personnel by assigning work orders, directing daily shop activities, and performing "high-level" repairs to lead by example.
  • Partner with the Maintenance/General Manager to coordinate equipment release (motor vehicles, compaction units, etc.) for inspections and service, minimizing downtime for our routes.
  • Expertly plan and schedule repairs within the TMW Planning system, ensuring all parts are procured and staged before the truck hits the bay.
  • Oversee the division’s tire program, attend all scrap-outs to identify wear patterns, and manage inventory integrity to eliminate waste.
  • Manage monthly POs, reconcile TMW data with Corporate Purchasing Cards, and execute Month-End (EOM) reporting with 100% accuracy.
  • Authorize the purchase of tools and supplies; coordinate with external contractors for specialized repairs that exceed in-house capabilities.
  • Ensure every vehicle meets GFL, DOT, and FMCSA standards. Maintain meticulous maintenance and safety records required by federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Evaluate the cause and extent of damage resulting from accidents, providing technical reports to leadership to support insurance and safety claims.
  • Assist in hiring, training, and monitoring the performance of technicians; identify skill gaps and lead ongoing technical training sessions.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and Acting Supervisor in the absence of the Maintenance Manager.
