About The Position

Under the direction of the Senior Shift Leader, the Shift Leader is responsible for supervising various detention staff and is responsible for the overall operations of the maximum security detention facility of the Allen County Juvenile Center. This position is covered under the Superior Court Employee Handbook. This is an employee-at-will position.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent of five years' experience working in a maximum detention facility
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing skills used to create reports
  • Strong supervisory skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office and other job-related software
  • Proficiency in using handcuffs, restraint chairs and shields, and other approved restraint techniques, as well as operating an AED device and hand-held radios.
  • Must be able to physically perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all departmental records and information.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises detention staff by conducting performance appraisals, implementing corrective actions, providing assistance, scheduling, and facilitating training.
  • Demonstrates the ability to supervise as the principal in-charge during non-traditional hours and assists in providing security and discipline for assigned youths.
  • Reviews all incident and discipline reports concerning residents and/or staff, offering additional assistance and/or corrective action as appropriate.
  • Effectively communicates with accuracy via typed documents for court purposes, employee instructions, and performance evaluations.
  • Maintains effective and accurate communication with employees, the general public, and outside agencies regarding information used in court, employee instructions and evaluations, general information, and assistance.
  • Conducts staff meetings and educational workshops.
  • Prepares annual employee performance appraisals.
  • Makes recommendations for disciplinary actions to superiors regarding policy and procedure infractions committed by detention staff.
  • Responds to emergencies within the maximum security detention facility, including conflicts between residents requiring physical restraint, escape attempts, or medical issues requiring CPR.
  • Inspects the maximum security detention facility daily to ensure the safety and security of residents and staff in all work and living areas.
  • Ensures appropriate security measures are taken during specialized programming and activities.
  • Grants requests from detention staff for benefit time to be taken.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
