About The Position

Upchurch Company is seeking an experienced Sheet Metal Apprentice with 3–4 years of HVAC/mechanical installation experience to join our Special Projects team. This division handles accelerated‑schedule work, tenant improvements, retrofits, small‑scale mechanical upgrades, and specialty commercial installations. We are looking for a hands‑on, detail‑oriented apprentice who can support journeymen while working efficiently and professionally in active customer environments.

Requirements

  • 3–4 years of experience in HVAC sheet metal installation on commercial or industrial projects.
  • Strong knowledge of common sheet metal tools and field fabrication techniques.
  • Ability to read basic drawings, understand layout direction, and identify ductwork components.
  • Experience supporting retrofits, renovations, or small project environments preferred.
  • High attention to detail and ability to deliver clean, quality work with minimal rework.
  • Comfort working from ladders and manlifts and navigating tight or occupied spaces.
  • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to Upchurch safety practices.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, especially in customer‑occupied environments.
  • OSHA 10 certification preferred (Upchurch can assist with obtaining if needed).
  • Must have reliable transportation and the ability to work at various job sites.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with installation, modification, and replacement of HVAC sheet metal systems for special projects, including: Spiral and round duct, flex duct, and custom fittings
  • Fire dampers, motorized dampers, splitter dampers, air devices, and terminal units
  • Rooftop unit tie‑ins, fan replacements, and small‑system retrofits
  • Perform light fabrication and adjustments in the field using shears, snips, brakes, punches, drills, and other power tools.
  • Install hangers, supports, and duct connections utilizing drives, S‑cleats, TDC/TDF systems, sealants, gaskets, screws, and hardware.
  • Measure, cut, and fit materials with precision to meet special‑project requirements, often in fully occupied spaces.
  • Assist with site prep, equipment movement, and coordination on fast‑paced jobs with tight timelines.
  • Safely operate ladders, lifts, and work platforms at various heights.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and represent Upchurch positively when working in customer‑facing areas.
  • Support journeymen and project leads on tasks requiring advanced coordination, field verification, and on‑the-fly adjustments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure successful project completion.
