About The Position

The Sheet Metal Fabrication Shop Manager leads and manages the daily operations of the HVAC sheet metal fabrication shop. This hands-on supervisory role oversees a team of skilled technicians in the fabrication, assembly, and detailing of ductwork and related components. The Shop Manager ensures projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards while strictly adhering to company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and customer expectations.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • 4–6 years of related experience in HVAC sheet metal fabrication, preferably in a supervisory or lead role; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hands-on experience with plasma cutting software and modern fabrication equipment is required.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) with employees, team members, and small groups.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Strong working knowledge of basic algebra and geometry for layout and estimation purposes.
  • Ability to solve practical problems, interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form, and deal with variables in situations with limited standardization.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all financial aspects of fabrication projects, including ongoing job tracking, cost monitoring, and accurate reporting.
  • Manage shop inventory through forecasting, requisitions, month-end processes, and billing coordination.
  • Collaborate closely with prefabrication, design, detailing, and installation teams to ensure seamless project coordination, accurate scheduling, and on-time delivery.
  • Set clear goals, expectations, and performance standards for technicians; provide regular coaching, counseling, and performance feedback.
  • Develop and enforce first-time quality standards; lead the Material Review Board (MRB) process to identify, track, and resolve quality issues.
  • Estimate labor, time, and material requirements for projects; participate in project kickoffs, closeouts, and post-project reviews.
  • Perform detailed shop drawings, field measurements, and cut sheets as needed; enter projects into the fabrication queue and coordinate with installation teams for accuracy.
  • Interpret blueprints, specifications, and job orders; assign duties and adjust work procedures to meet production schedules.
  • Monitor production schedules, allocate worker hours, and recommend improvements to methods, equipment, quality, efficiency, and safety.
  • Hands-on fabrication and assembly of ductwork and equipment when required to support the team or meet deadlines.
  • Maintain accurate time, production, and maintenance records; ensure proper setup and upkeep of machines and equipment.
  • Enforce company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and industry best practices at all times.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, train, and develop shop personnel to meet workload demands.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships within the HVAC and construction industry.
  • Analyze and resolve production or personnel issues; motivate the team to achieve goals and maintain high morale.
