About The Position

We are seeking a driven and detail oriented Set Up Reduction Intern (SMED) to join our Manufacturing Engineering and Operations Team. In this position, you will support the implementation of setup reduction initiatives across various fabrication processes, including laser cutting, press brakes, welding, hardware installation, Assembly Line, and Box Making. This role will focus on analyzing current workflows, documenting setup procedures, identifying inefficiencies, and proposing improvements to reduce setup time and increase production throughput. This internship is ideal for a Junior, Senior, or Graduate student studying Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline with an interest in lean manufacturing, process improvement, and hands-on shop-floor experience.

Requirements

  • Interest in lean manufacturing principles, workflow optimization, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret data and identify trends.
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on manufacturing environment and interacting with production personnel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to produce high-quality results on a consistent basis.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited university/college program as a Junior, Senior, or Graduate student majoring in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar field.
  • High school interns will be considered based on relevant skills and interests.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing setup reduction strategies across fabrication equipment including laser cutting machines, press brakes, welding stations, and hardware installation areas.
  • Observe, document, and analyze existing setup procedures to identify non–value-added activities or sources of waste.
  • Convert internal setup activities to external activities to increase machine production.
  • Develop standardized work instructions, visual aids, and best practices to support faster, repeatable setups.
  • Collect time studies and data to measure setup performance, validate improvements, and quantify gains.
  • Collaborate with operators, manufacturing engineers, and production supervisors to understand workflow challenges and incorporate feedback into solutions.
  • Support Continuous Improvement initiatives such as 5S, SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die), and workflow optimization.
  • Assist with piloting new setup methods, validating feasibility, gathering operator input, and adjusting documentation as needed.
  • Partner with other department Team Members to support and complete various responsibilities, projects, and/or tasks as necessary.
