About The Position

Service Technician I Schedule: 40 hours per week (hours may vary) Hands-on problem solvers who enjoy working outdoors, fixing things, and helping customers keep essential services running smoothly. What You'll Do As a Service Technician I with the City of Fort Wayne Water Utility, you'll help maintain and support the systems that deliver clean water to homes and businesses across the community. This role combines mechanical work, troubleshooting, and customer service while supporting water meter maintenance and field service operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • One year of construction, mechanical, plumbing, or related field experience preferred
  • Ability to learn meter installation, pipefitting, and basic plumbing tasks through on-the-job training
  • Comfortable using Apple-based iPad technology and mobile work systems
  • Ability to read and interpret water maps, service diagrams, and blueprints
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and comfort using hand tools and small equipment
  • Ability to learn copper pipe fitting, soldering, and meter maintenance techniques (training provided)
  • Ability to document work orders and maintain service records accurately
  • Strong communication skills when working with customers, coworkers, and supervisors

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Indiana Driver's License

Responsibilities

  • Install, remove, test, and repair residential and commercial water meters, including large meters weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Turn water service on and off, adjust curb boxes, and locate service lines using specialized equipment
  • Inspect meters and investigate leaks on private property, hydrants, valves, and distribution lines
  • Perform field work including digging and backfilling excavations, breaking pavement, and making temporary service connections when needed
  • Maintain inventory, prepare new meters for installation, update records, and manage service orders through the CIS Mobile system
