About The Position

The purpose of this position is to enforce all local, federal, and state laws relating to the public’s safety and welfare in the County. Identify, collect, and preserve evidence from crime scene investigations, attend autopsies, and participate in trials and hearings. The Technician is responsible for taking notes, photographing, searching and transporting evidence to processing laboratories.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of South Carolina state laws and county ordinances
  • Knowledge of County policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of evidence recovery and preservation techniques and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Good customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively and accurately document evidence and investigative activities
  • Ability to communicate appropriately with the public, law enforcement officers, attorneys, appointed officials, suspects and victims
  • Ability to interpret technical instructions, manuals, charts and procedures
  • Advanced mathematical skills
  • Ability to lead and guide others
  • Advanced problem solving skills
  • Ability to effectively multitask
  • Completion of high school/GED
  • Valid SC Drivers License
  • SC Class 1 Law Enforcement Certification
  • SLED Marijuana Analyst Certification
  • Related-experience required: 2 years

Responsibilities

  • Record submitted evidence.
  • Clear and properly dispose of evidence after cases clear.
  • Collect evidence from crime scenes.
  • Prepare documents and photographs of evidence.
  • Process evidence in the processing laboratory.
  • Prepare evidence for submission to external laboratories.
  • Transport evidence to external laboratories for additional analysis.
  • Maintain appropriate legal documentation for evidence collected.
  • Prepare latent print comparisons and entries into AFIS.
  • Appear and testify in court regarding the processing and analysis of evidence.
  • Remain prepared for after-hours on-call duty.
  • Prepare and return properties collected to the rightful owner.
  • Attend and document autopsies.
  • Sign evidence in and out to deputies for court while maintaining proper documentation.
  • Attend mandatory training as required.
  • Develop and maintain Evidence Submission Manual for the department.
  • Orders and maintain forensic supplies for the department.
  • Fingerprint members of the public when needed.
  • Assist other agencies with crime scene and evidence duties as requested.
