About The Position

The Sepsis Coordinator plays a vital role in the continued development, evaluation and implementation of sepsis treatment. The Sepsis Coordinator ensures adherence to the early goal-directed therapy bundle elements (as developed by the Surviving Sepsis Campaign) in collaboration with the healthcare team. The role also assists in hospital utilization and resource management, coordinates care through the continuum, performs case review, and monitors and reports quality outcomes. The Sepsis Coordinator works in collaboration with all hospital staff to support the multidisciplinary care of the septic patient.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical nursing with ICU or ED experience AND minimum of 3 years of clinical unit leadership/management experience
  • Computer skills to include Microsoft Office, Excel, and other clinical software systems.
  • Ability to analyze and problem solve independently and disseminate data to relevant groups across the health system.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement processes.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills that display effective and professional customer service skills and interaction.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Nursing
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia, Certification in specialty area
  • Proficient in use of electronic health records.
  • Completion of VCUH Quality Academy

Responsibilities

  • Represent sepsis care internally and externally by working to develop relationships with front-line team members, internal stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Drive change through influence and consensus building to promote quality outcomes.
  • Build trust with colleagues and members of the multidisciplinary team that cares for potentially septic patients.
  • Translate clinical knowledge, experience, and evidence-based research/guidelines into clinical practice.
  • Establish and lead a Sepsis Committee for adult inpatient and ED services and collaborate efforts to ensure alignment, as appropriate, with Sepsis Coordinators at other VCU Health entities.
  • Serve as Project Manager/Process Owner for improvement projects identified and ensure best practices and workflows are implemented. Work in tandem with Sepsis Clinical leaders for improvements to current practice.
  • Develop collaborative relationship and workflows with (new) ED sepsis response team and the Inpatient Rapid Response Team.
  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert and leader for improvements to EHR to support clinical workflows and reporting.
  • Establish and maintain guidelines, protocols, SharePoint site management in addition to creating and publicizing events during Sepsis Awareness Month to support organizational awareness and engagement.
