About The Position

Our Blood Institute is currently seeking a Senior Testing Laboratory Technician. This position will work independently on projects in the lab and handle maintenance and training responsibilities. He/She will provide support on a variety of projects including creation of and systemic improvements/enhancements to Blood Bank documents and validation plans as well as provide mentoring/training to Verifiers of Blood Bank documents and Blood Bank document authors in training. Additionally, the position resolves or delegates issues as needed to ensure a safe blood supply and a reasonable testing turnaround time. Shall perform tests and equipment maintenance which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, with minimal supervision by the Director of Testing Operation and Testing Laboratory Supervisor, in only those specialties or subspecialties in which they are qualified by education, training, and experience. Responsible for sample processing, test performance, equipment maintenance, and for reporting test results in at least two departments. He/She must be qualified as General Supervisor per CLIA regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution.
  • Must have 2 or more years of OBI Laboratory experience and/or previous laboratory experience.
  • Must have at least two years of lab experience for high and moderate complexity testing for CLIA General Supervisor requirements
  • Strong computer skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required

Responsibilities

  • Commit and validate testing results
  • Follow Testing Laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures for sample handling and processing, testing, reporting, and maintaining records of test results.
  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies and document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Can identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems and immediately notify the testing laboratory management or Medical director.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Resolve any problems with blood units, equipment, or staff
  • Perform all necessary maintenance on testing equipment and document on applicable maintenance forms.
  • Ensure that preventative maintenance, calibrations, verifications, and QC are performed on all testing equipment in the lab
  • Ensure that proficiency test samples are performed and that reports are reviewed and reported by defined timelines
  • Must be accessible to the laboratory to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation
  • Ensuring that test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation and report equipment issues to Testing Lab Supervisor
  • Discard samples as required
  • Review maintenance, instrument test runs and other required paperwork.
  • Check equipment daily for specific area
  • Maintain reagents and keep track of current Master lots
  • Assist with any projects and notify Testing Lab Supervisor of any issues in the Lab
  • Train staff on Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Ensure equipment QC and maintenance is performed
  • Serve as a client service representative for the Testing Lab
  • Troubleshooting issues with equipment, reagents, and controls
  • Ensure that technologists/technicians are trained to perform assigned task and that competency is verified annually and/or semi-annually as required
  • Provide technical assistance for Testing Operations Lab staff
  • Ensure that testing laboratory is kept in good repair and that environmental requirements for testing are met
  • Ensure that testing is performed in accordance with package insert labeling requirements
  • Ensure that staff uses PPE as required
  • Assist in the development of staffing schedules
  • Ensure that SOP's are an accurate representation of how work is performed
  • Ensure that testing supplies and reagents are available, inspected, validated, and maintained in accordance with cGMP requirements
  • Ensure that all equipment maintenance is performed at the required intervals.
  • Ensure that minimum stock levels of reagents and supplies are maintained
  • Ensure that reagents and supplies are inspected and qualified before using
  • Notify vendors of equipment failures and required maintenance
  • Run reports as required to ensure that pending tests are performed
  • Communicate all accessioning, sample processing, testing, equipment, and reagent issues to Supervisor.
  • Available for taking on-call for STAT testing and testing due to blood inventory issues.
  • Be available to work hours according to draw/clients and rotate weekends/holidays.
  • Perform staff competency assessments.
  • Perform additional duties as designated by Director of Testing Operation and Testing Laboratory Supervisor
