A Day in the Life The Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Operating Unit is a global leader and trusted partner for innovative ENT solutions that improve patient access, outcomes, and customer satisfaction. A Day in the Life The Sr Test Engineer is a key technical role of the R&D software/hardware development and test team. This role will work as a member of a large multi-functional (hardware, software, electrical, mechanical, and systems) team in the software Test development for both GUI and embedded software for ENT Products reflecting high professional standards. This role is responsible for ensuring that software used in the development, manufacturing and as part of medical devices is developed and tested according to good design practices and follows the corresponding requirements set forth by local procedures, regulatory authorities and notified bodies. This role will provide the technical test leadership, deep subject matter expertise, technical/project oversight, and team member training/coaching.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science & Engineering, or Electrical Engineering, or related Engineering discipline is required with minimum of 4 years of Software testing experience in medical device or regulated industry, OR Master’s degree in Engineering with 2 years of experience, OR PhD in Engineering with 0 years of experience

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of Software Testing experience with at least 2 years of Medical Device Software development and/or embedded system testing.
  • Ability to read and understand System requirements, Software requirement specifications, Architecture, and detailed design documents
  • Ability to write Software Verification Plans, Test plans, regression plans, protocols, unit tests, and reports.
  • Ability to perform software risk analysis.
  • Skilled in the identification and debugging of software and hardware defects
  • Experience with multiple programming languages including C, C++, C#, Python, etc.
  • Experience over a range of platforms (i.e., .Net Framework, DSP, Azure DevOps, Ubuntu, etc.)
  • Experience with software configuration management and bug-tracking utilities.
  • Experience with unit test software concepts and utilities/harnesses.
  • Experience with automated testing environments (i.e., LabVIEW, Visual Studio, Ranorex, Jenkins, Playwright, etc.)
  • Familiar with electrical components and signal analysis.
  • Experience with electrical test equipment (i.e., Multimeters, Oscilloscopes, Function Generators, Spectrum Analyzers, etc.)
  • Able to work and communicate effectively with other engineers, designers, marketers, and suppliers to develop products from concept through commercialization in a cross-functional team
  • Skilled in the use of Office Products (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Microsoft Project, etc.)
  • Excellent understanding of Systems Engineering
  • Familiarity with regulatory documents such as IEC 60601.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes towards the creation and review of functional requirements.
  • Manage test expectations during the Design, Development, and Verification phases.
  • Integrate Software and Hardware sub-systems to perform software system verification in various environments and conditions including Operating room (OR) and In Office use.
  • Develop and execute V&V test plans, protocols, and prepare auditable test reports.
  • Conduct technical assessment for Design Inputs (DI) resulting in viable verification strategies to satisfy the DIs.
  • Adhere to internal quality processes and procedures, and produce quality artifacts such as Trace Matrices, Verification and Validation report Summaries, and other necessary documentation satisfying regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and utilize new tools to assist in test automation efforts throughout the product development and maintenance processes.
  • Develop nonproduct software for test fixtures and provide needed validation documentation.
  • Identify, report, and track defects found as part of automation and manual verification activities.
  • Participate in identifying the root cause of defects and offer strategic advice in resolving them.
  • Perform code reviews to ensure the code is written according to coding standards and the edge cases are handled correctly.
  • Collaborate with the electronics lab technicians, mechanical group, electrical group, and new product development group in designing/building test fixtures needed for system verification activities.
  • Generate specifications, test plans, and test reports for fixture validation purposes and release the same in PLM.
  • Work within established development standards and methodologies, including agile development.
  • Responsible for helping developers deliver a working prototype at the end of each sprint
  • Advocate for the end-users during Stakeholder demos and VOC sessions, translating technical test results into meaningful updates regarding product readiness and safety.
  • Represent the Software test group on all software-related testing decisions, acting as the team’s representative in cross-functional meetings.
  • Provide inputs on coding for testability, execution of verification protocols, and code reviews while adhering to coding standards.
  • Assist the usability team by prepping the needed system for the VOC (Voice of Customer) demos, meeting user acceptance criteria and ensuring workflow meets end-users’ expectations.
  • Understanding Software Safety Classifications (Class A, B, C) and the ability to tailor verification rigor based on the safety impact of the software component.
  • Work with and provide technical leadership to other development engineers, lab technicians, and Junior test engineers.
  • Ensure adherence to product specifications, industry standards, and quality and regulatory procedures and requirements.
  • Create innovative technical test solutions which lead to the development and introduction of new technologies, products, and processes that support ongoing business objectives.
